It seems there is 5.1 surround sound Audrey Congratulations anyway, hope you get on OK with it. I wouldn't mind betting you use it more than the desktop now

      Re: New Laptop

Enjoy it, Audrey. I'm sure you will too.

I have an Inspiron 9400 lappy, bought it in 1996 and that's a 17" screen. I used it as a desktop for a while when my previous PC went belly-up and still use it for back-up or surfing when I'm away from my desktop. It's always handy to have some backup for getting online in case the PC fails- which is why I was so grateful for mine at that time!

The 17" screen is heavy though - definitely not so easy for carrying about. I'd go for a 15" in future.

Yes Stephen, I realised after I found further technical details.

There is an option to personalise the computer to an individual's requirements and when I got to this page, I thought it meant there was no sound.

I am sure I shall enjoy it even though I didn't really need it as we have two desk tops.

It will be interesting to see how Windows7 compares to Vista. Vista has now speeded up somewhat.

Thanks to you and Pol for your good wishes.

          Surely you mean 2006

17 inch screens were science fiction in 1996

Hi Yoshi - is the graphics card - a card - or is it an on-board chip? If it is a separate card, is it AGP or PCI Express? The general opinion at the moment when I read UK PC magazines is that ATI is currently ahead of nVidia, but I would think that in real terms there is not a lot of difference between the two.

Well done! I'm looking forward to hearing about your new toy!

As you are familiar with Vista, Windows 7 is fundamentally similar, with some knobs on. You will be at home with it very quickly!

              When are you expecting delivery?

                Re: New Laptop

Well I have just been looking.

It says anytime up to 15 days! Seems a long time to me to say there is a recession on!

Anyway it continued with 'If you have paid by Credit Card it will be quicker than having taken a loan out,' which I did (pay by cc).

I have a few numbers to follow up. So far only the order confirmation. Usually I get an acknowledgement of payment, but I think they said it takes a little longer.

Have just ordered a Knight Suit and Breastplate from 2 different places for our grandson, and have received order and payment confirmation straight away.

It's not as though Dell is unknown. I will have to be patient. I think I read they were busy.

                  Oops - yep!

I seem to be tripping over loads of senior moments today!

I can't remember the exact details but they've always been very quick to deliver here.

I seem to remember they phoned to arrange a delivery time as soon as the payment had been cleared. The phone call came within 24-48hrs iirc - delivery was within 7-10 days each time.

Hi Ian, what I have in mind now is a PCI Express-16 card which occupies two slots. I have an nVIDIA 8800GT on another machine and so far am satisfied with it. So I thought I would get a similar one for another PC which now has a nearly 8-yr-old nVidia. I will look into more info about others. I know I'm not up to the minutes. Although I'm not seeking for getting the newest one, but anyway I want to make a well informed decision. Thanks again for the info.

Does your current motherboard have PCI Express support? Will you need a new motherboard? I'm very pleased with Asus motherboards.

yes, it has. Although I call the desktop older machine, actually I already replaced both mother board and CPU in Summer, after getting advices from keithrsmith at this board. Now i'm going to re-work on it and planning to replace the case and power supply unit and some more eventually.

Glad to know that you, too, like Asus which is also my preference.

This is the colour of my new Dell Laptop Studio 15.

Here is the link - it is in the first column and I had the basic spec. It has a separate graphics card Ian.

The full spec details are available, if you are interested, if you click on "Tech Details" on the grey tab at the top.

I have ordered Spring Green with a Spring Green Mouse.

Dell provides technology solutions, services & support. Buy Laptops, Touch Screen PCs, Desktops, Servers, Storage, Monitors, Gaming & Accessories

Thanks to all of you for your help. It has been great and I expect you are right that I didn't need a 17" screen.

I shall have to ask Father Christmas for a carrying bag now. (In Spring Green of course!)

PS: You can see the colour if you click on the green laptop pic. It looks very shiny. I am also very excited.
Looks a nice machine Audrey, enjoy.

i have little faith in anyone's laptop hard drive, even the Apple MacBook Pro i carry. would anyone care to continue the conversation into external Raid storage? any preferences out there? considering Drobo and G-Tech.

The hard drives in both my iMac & MacBook Pro are Hitachi, if memory serves me correctly formally IBM.

I have a 2TB Buffalo TeraStation (4x 500GB) which has raid supporting mirrored level 1, striped level 2, and the way I have mine set up BIDP level 5 which is a cross between the two. Mirrored gives just 1TB of storage mirroring the info on the other 1TB, the safest as you have two copies. Striped gives the full 2TB ( one copy only) the info is spread across all 4 drives, less save as if one of the drives fails all info is lost, after replacing the failed drive the backup would have to be re-built from the original source, your computer or laptop.
Then there is the system I use which gives 1.5TB the info is spread as with striping, but the advantage is if one of the 4 drives fail and a replacement fitted the info is rebuilt automatically without reference to the original source. Sorry if all this is familiar to you but there will be those reading this thread that may find it useful to know.

The TeraStation works on a network and cannot be connect via USB or Firewire so it is rather slow at backing up, in fact painfully slow.
My own backup regime consists if a 1TB external HD (via Firewire, very quick indeed) backing up the computer which is then in turn backup to the TersStation.
In addition I run a 1TB external HD with Time Machine backup, only available to Mac users, although I would imagine someone out there has something similar for Windows.
My MacBook has a portable 500GB HD with Time machine.
