Out of interest, why has NEC dropped off your list?
The problem with looking at a monitor in a shop is that you don't know if it has been set up properly. I think you are right in asking the opinions of owners and of course I'd recommend that you look at reviews. I find Sony, Samsung, NEC, Eizo (Nanao) and iiyama (not sure if this brand is available in the USA) to be very good, though most brands have some models that are not as good as the others. I've also heard some good things about Dell monitors.

Not to say that I know much about monitors.....but I did recently read a review of 5 or 6 monitors in a photography mag from the usual brand names and they listed Dell as tops....as Ian mentioned...could be something worth looking into.
