I do have a cd so I could start it with that if I knew exactly how!

As Patrick suggested, I have uninstalled CCleaner and restored it to a date prior to the last download and when it was booting up correctly, but it hasn't made any difference.

Can anyone throw any light on this for me please?

Re: Computer hanging on boot up

As you are using Vista Audrey you can probably repair the star easily.
Boot from the DVD, and when you get to the 'Install Now' screen select the 'Repair My Computer' button. It will run for several minutes trying to repair the start up procedure, and if it is not a hardware problem all should be well.

Thanks Roger, I thought I saw Repair on something and I thought I had clicked it, but I had not inserted the cd.

That is because I am not sure which cd it is.

Is it the Medion Recovery Disc - Windows Vista Home Premium or is it:

Application and Support Disc - Bundle software, not for resale?

If is it the Medion Recovery Disc, am I right in thinking that I close down the computer, insert the disc and then start the computer?

Sorry for being so ignorant, but I don't want to make things worse.

        Hi Audrey,
Now I have to admit that I don't know how Medion manage their software. However, if they have included the star repair procedure on the dvd it will be on the Recovery disc.
Yes, if it is available, you will have to boot from the dvd.
Thinking about it, don't Medion provide a printed manual for moments like this?

I don't think you're ignorant Audrey, I think you're very brave. If it was me, the thing would be unplugged, bundled into the car and straight down to PC World!

Hope you get things sorted soon (and it stays sorted!)

            Hi Audrey

Be carful using the recovery disk, it may write over all of your info and lose it.
Back everything up you can first.
However being Vista it may save everything in a folder first during the procces but I wouldn't count on it.
Roger is correct that Vista will repair itself but I beleive that is using a Vista CD/DVD instalation disk, Recovery discs can be differant with the computer manufacturers own stuff mingled in with the OS, rather than the OS being on its own.

A tip I recomend is to either partition the H/D (This is best done when setting up for the first time, (although with partition software it could be done now) or have a second H/D installed, either way all your files and images can be saved to this drive. I have even moved the My Documents Folder to such a Partition/HD and keep data seperate from the OS. If you need to re-install Vista all data is then unaffected.

You have more faith in PC World than I have

Re: Computer hanging on boot up

I removed my 2 hard drives before writing the above message which I wrote is safe mode.

I then decided to try to start the computer again and engage my hard drives again. At this point the computer wanted to scan them both for errors, so I let it.

I tried to boot with the cd by pressing any key. At this point I think it said it was loading windows files. It was in safe mode. I waited and a few options came on screen, one of which was:

Repair computer> fix problems that prevent pc from starting.

I clicked on this and let it repair it, but it said that there was no fault.

I am wondering if the fault had been with one of my external hard drives.

I removed the cd and restarted the computer and it didn't hang.

I shall keep my fingers crossed that it starts OK tomorrow morning.

Once again thanks to everyone for your help.
