Yep, looks to me like an AMD 1800mhz 64bit processor unless anyone else know better.

Thought so. What to do now? That is the question. What would you do?

Nope, the clock speed of the processor is not way to gauge performance any more. In fact some much higher clock speeds in some processors will actually not exceed the performance of other processors with much lower clock speeds. It's all to do with how much work the processor can do in one CPU clock tick.

AMD operates an 'equivalence' PR or Performance Rating for some of its CPUs, so Autumn's AMD-rated '3100' is estimated to be of equivalent performance to a 3100MHz Intel Pentium 4 even though the AMD CPU is only clocked at 1800MHz. In fact AMD tend to be a bit conservative and testers usually find that AMD processors slightly out-perform their rating estimate.

From what I can gauge from the spec. Autumn's PC offers, it's actually not an Athlon CPU but an AMD Sempron. This is because the on-chip cache is just 256K rather than an Athlon's 512K or higher cache.

But the bottom line is, Autumn, you have got what you specified so all is well.

If you r/click 'My Computer' and click 'properties' it should give you the correct size of the processor and the memoory size

I have an Athlon 3700 and it shows just that, but it also shows 2.21mhz.

            I think yours should say Athlon 64 3100 + 1.8Ghz. 1 gb of ram. I think.

Yes, he's just given me a cuddle and said "There, there."

He says he's been looking through his pictures quite happily anyway.

I am glad I asked. I really thought if I saw 1800 that is what it meant.

I didn't want to have to do anything about it anyway.

Thanks a lot Ian and Stephen. It's a good job we have forums like this to prevent people like me making a fool of myself.

Your so right, the 3100 amd is in fact a 1.8 mhz processor so will report that as in your test. I think you should Google AMD 3100 and get the full spec before you complain as it looks to me that you have got what you paid for.

As I mentioned in my other reply in this thread, I'm pretty sure that Autumn's CPU is a Sempron, not an Athlon as it has less cache memory, but as the chip is virtually the same as an Athlon apart from this, it may be identified as an Athlon.

And to illustrate the unreliability of clock speed to CPU performance, my desktop PC's CPU is only driven at 2GHz compared to your 2.21GHz, is an Athlon 64 like yours, but is rated at 3800 rather than your 3700 Mine is actually a Dual Core Athlon 64 X2 3800+.

I thought I had answered you, but I probably previewed it and forgot to post it.

Anyway you are right. It says:

                    AMD Sempron (tm) processor 3100+

                    1.80 GHz
960 MB RAM (I wonder where the other 40 MB RAM went?)

                    Thanks

1GB is 1024MB and it's likely some of the memory is pinched by your graphics sub-system, so 64M RAM shared in this way is about right.

The spec. is fine and you should get good use out of it. My only concern is the hard disk, which looks very small.

Yes Ian it is, but Roy only uses it for photographs. I noticed it's getting full so I will take some stuff off. All his holiday pics are on cd and on an external hard drive. It is quite an old computer. I think it came with Windows 98.
