Re: New Graphics Card Required
I think its fair to say the graphics card is b*****d.Originally posted by Autumn View PostUrgent!
I am attaching a screengrab. Can anyone confirm for me that it is the graphics card that is failing?
It's very difficulty for me to see what I am writing.
I'd just go to the nearest computer shop and get a new 128mb ATI Radion or equivalent card. I don't think the exact model is too critical. They have the same fitting and should be a simple plug and play installation. Though it may come with a driver disc

looks like it. i'm surprised that you're limited to just the one card though. check ebuyer.com as they're usually pretty competitive on pricing.
is the fan spinning on the graphics card?
do you get the lines as soon as the pc is switched on or after it's warmed up a bit? if the latter, then something, probably the graphics card, is overheating.

If you type into google the model number you will find many price comparison sites.Originally posted by Autumn View Post
However as Stephen has indicated its not essential to replace with the exact card, why not take the opportunity and upgrade the card to a higher spec.

After surfing around and having 'On line' conversations with a Techie", I think that is what I am going to do tomorrow Stephen.Originally posted by Stephen View PostI'd just go to the nearest computer shop and get a new 128mb ATI Radion or equivalent card. Re: New Graphics Card Required
I thought you meant one card in my computer! I now think you mean that there may be a compatible one of a different make. The trouble is, I wouldn't know what that was.Originally posted by devilgas View Postlooks like it. i'm surprised that you're limited to just the one card though. check ebuyer.com as they're usually pretty competitive on pricing.

The screen goes criss-crossed as soon as the computer is switched on.
I have now removed the Graphics Card and the fan will spin if I move it - it isn't stuck.
I was talking to a Techie today and he said I might need a splitter. In fact this is what he said:
"Thanks, yes, confirms what I thought, your 9800 uses the smaller FDD-type pwr connector. Our current range of mid to hi-end AGP cards, including 7600`s, use 4pin molex, same type as your hard drive and cdrom drives. But if you have no spare connectors from the PSU, easy enough to use a splitter cable to make a junction to one of the drives and the card. If you need a splitter cable, just let us know after you have ordered, so we can include one for you."
Trouble is I keep asking "How Much" - I don't think he is reading my questions!"
I am getting out of my depth.
I removed the graphics card and it just plugged in and was secured by a plastic clip. I'm baffled.

Re: New Graphics Card Required
I am attaching 3 photographs.
I do not understand why I would want a splitter as this Graphics Card just plugged into the Red Slot on the picture and was fastened with the plastic clip and then had one screw to secure it.
If anyone can throw any light on what alternative might fit, I should be grateful. Failing that I shall be hawking my dead Graphics Card around town in the morning.

but they don't seem to reveal anything.
I really don't need to upgrade as it was OK before and it is only a backup computer that my husband saves his pics on and surfs the Internet.
I just need a cheap replacement, as the computer is 5 years old and I don't know what might go next!

Pleasing to learn and what a great price to have it fixed.
