I was going to copy my husband's photographs onto our joint external hard drive, only to find that I had already done it a few months ago.

Is there anyway that I can copy any new ones and update any alterations and at the same time not touch any that have not been altered, without having to copy all the photographs again, and thus creating duplicates?

Thanks Stephen. I have downloaded it and will give it a try. I thought that there must be something out there.

I use SyncEXP ( http://syncexp.com/ ) which is freeware and has never let me down. Might also be worth a look.
