Re: Laptop under performing.
what processes are responsible for the 50% activity? click CPU twice in the processes list to put stuff in usage order. do you recognise the process that's using the cpu time?

Re: Laptop under performing.
I think you might be Patrick!
However, in the bottom right hand side, next to the clock, displays all the program that are running. Try closing (right click close....he says teaching him to suck eggs!) all those applications that you are not using, and see if that improves the performance.
Also, I wonder whether in the background Vista may be downloading some updates. I know in the past when I have been frustrated with performance, I hadnt noticed that updates were occuring in the background, and I do know that updates (sp1) has been released recently.
Maybe trying to instal SP1 might even help?

Re: Laptop under performing.
Thanks you guys for your response, today the machine is running fineOriginally posted by paul.r.w View PostHave you done a spyware check as well as virus?
Last night it was going as described all evening even after shutting down and rebooting.
The process with all the activity was ZCfgSvc.exe which in properties says its Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin
I disconnected the the router and reconnected again and thus fare things are quite calm.
I plan (its late now and I have had a long day) to do an extra AVG full system scan for everything (as apposed to the scheduled scan) with the cable disconnected.

Thanks for that very informative, although there seems to be some confusion if or not the file is harmful.Originally posted by devilgas View Posta description of what it is / does can be found on http://www.file.net/process/zcfgsvc.exe.html
The computer is running fine at the moment, despite another problem of it not recognising the hard drive now and then when switched on, a retry and it boots OK.
Reported it to Dell and they are going to send me a new replacment H/D as its believed this one has an intermittent fault.
So the problem of a clean install has sorted itself the new H/D will be installed clean.
Dell have been extremely helpful, and not tried to make excuses or blame software or any of the usual put offs.

Re: Laptop under performing.
It would seem the problem is solved however if your machine is on the borderline for the minimal system rquirements for vista, which I bet alot are, here is a link to tips on improving your performance by disabling unwanted programs and gizmo's in vista.
Vista is very system hungry and will use all thats available to it, its been designed for todays spec machines, and will use all recources available to it unless you tell it otherwise, essentially a computer is only as good as its operator, the operator is you!

Re: Laptop under performing.
Since asking for opinions on my under preforming Laptop, Dell have replaced my H/D (under warranty) which had a intermittent fault, and I have now installed Vista clean. The result is like a new computer, its now almost but not quite as fast as the PC.Originally posted by ash View PostIt would seem the problem is solved however if your machine is on the borderline for the minimal system rquirements for vista, which I bet alot are, here is a link to tips on improving your performance by disabling unwanted programs and gizmo's in vista.

A 100Meg image file opens in Photoshop in the blink of an eye, well perhaps two blinks
Which has had the biggest impact, the new H/D or the clean install is hard to guess, I suspect the clean install.
So it goes show Vista is best installed clean and not installed as an upgrade from XP, which is what I had done originally.
Incidentally Dell were so efficient, a replacement H/D was on its way the following day by courier after analysing mine as faulty, I had to delay accepting it for a couple of days while I updated and completed by backups properly. (the old one had to be given to the courier)
I shall buy Dell again when the time to change comes along, that is if I stay PC and don't choose to go for a Mac.

Re: Laptop under performing.
Haha, I think it would be a revelation to you Patrick, no worrying about performance or tweaking software. Nothing to slow things up like AV software and all those other resource hungry little progs to apparently look after your system. Incredibly slick, smooth and whisper quiet. My next laptop will be a MacBook ProOriginally posted by Patrick View PostI shall buy Dell again when the time to change comes along, that is if I stay PC and don't choose to go for a Mac.
