iPod problem

Has anyone any experience of iPods.

Bought one yesterday for my wifes Xmas gift and wanted to start loading stuff so that it can be used on the day.

After a few tries I found it difficult to come to terms with loading what I wanted, anyway finally manged to load something but didn't like the way the titles showed.
I deleted and loaded again with everything retitled worked fine, but wanted to refine it more so started again.
That done exited in the appropriate way by ejecting first, then disconnected, the Apple screen came on, then off, then on, then off, and it been doing that now for over a hour and will not respond to any controls not even to switch it off completely.
I'm faced with letting it use the battery up perhaps then it might reboot or something when re-charged up.

Any suggestions please or do you think I have a faulty unit?

Patrick try keeping the centre button and Menu depressed at the same time. This should reboot the iPod. I take it you are using iTunes?

Somethings happened got a new screen and its recharging again, which means the computer can now see it. Yes I was using iTuns

Stephens advice is spot on. Should have other problems that cannt be resolved. I have always found hese forums useful

People here seem to have an uncanny knowledge of itunes and all ipods.

I support 5 iPods connecting to 4 different computers. We have a large collection of MP3s on 2 networked drives (one being a backup copy of the other).

iTunes is probably one of the most vexing pieces of software I've ever had the pleasure of using. I still can't get to grips with it. I've spent most of this afternoon ripping 5 new CDs to the collection. I can see all of them in my iTunes, the wife can't see any of them and my son can see 2 of them!

I've read of some alternatives to iTunes and may end up trying one or two of them.

Working in IT, as I do, I find it all a bit embarrassing not being able to get iTunes to do what I want to do but I know I'm not alone. I'm probably going to have to read the manual

Many thanks for the link, I thought my problems were solved but now its frozen on another image, plain white with a tick in the middle. It wont switch off but iTunes does see it and the downloads I have put on, just can't do anything with them one way or another.
But it has fully charged itself.

One's enough for me.
I appear to be making some progress now, Stephens method of pressing the twp part on the wheel at once help in that iTunes recognised the pod and I was then able to restore.
Now I have a problem the computer wont recognize wave files to to convert to MP3.

She used to use a computer until she took early retirement, then promptly forgot everything and wont even look at the two machines I own.

The pod is OK now just having problems with the laptop it doesn't seem to like iPod software.

Whats all this about Mac stuff being to intuitive, this load of (well I wont say it) doesn't look that intuitive to me.

I've never really had a problem with iTunes, except when I had to uninstall the version of Quicktime that often comes with the update, and install a standalone version. That problem seems to have been resolved no though. I take it you have loaded all the updates as the disc will no doubt be out of date. Apart from that it works perfectly, plug the pod in and it updates automatically, no need to do anything. I would suggest setting the preferences to rip CD's to MP3 rather than the iPod format which it does by default.

The cover flow view is really cool and is standard on all folders on a Mac now. Imagine scanning through folders of photos like that, even your Raw files. Oh and don't forget to download all the cover art work, though some may not be available

Yes all was all up to date.
It was a radio program I was trying to load 8 episodes of Paul Temple I had recorded at the turn of the year.

My wife listens to these sort of things currently on cassette tapes to help her sleep, she has unabridged books from Isis publishing so I thought all her tapes on an iPod would be great. Its going to be a long job getting them into the pod, shes been collecting for years and ignored all my pleading to buy them on CD.

I got an iPod Nano earlier in the year (Apple were waiting for me to buy one so they could then go and bring out the smaller ones with video! ).

I'd used other MP3 players before and didn't see any point to having an over-priced jumped-up MP3 player tied to Apple's format just to do what I was already doing.

Since I've been using it, though, I wouldn't go back. It's a great little thing and I like the way it's easy to use. I don't have a huge music library so I've been using the Nano to primarily listen to old radio shows (Sherlock Holmes, The Navy Lark, etc), audiobooks and so on.

The one thing that took me a while to figure out was to convert the audiobooks and radio shows to Apple's "audiobook format" so that it'll remember where you left off from if you go and listen to something else. That makes them far more convenient.
