  • File Size Quandary

I have never really got to grips with file sizes etc.

I am attaching the Exif for an image whereby its says that the File Size is 6.58 MB, but as soon as I open it in CS2 the Doc Information says 26.1 M (which I assume means MB).

Can anyone clarify this anomaly for me please?

If it's a JPEG file, the size quoted is the compressed image data. The large figure you see is the uncompressed size - usually about 3x the number of pixels (each pixel has three colour values, each represented by one byte).

Also, there are million pixels (decimal) and mega pixels (counting bytes or 1024x1024 pixels), so one million pixels is 1,000,000 while a megabyte is 1048576 pixels. Just to making things interesting you know - some programs calculate it one way and some the other

Thanks Ian. I didn't realise it was because they were compressed JPGS.

I looked at a RAW file and it was about 18 MB. I think that confirms it for me.

RAW file sizes are another matter - some are compressed, some aren't

the CS2 indicated filesize will always be larger than the calculated pixel count as it stores lots of other data in the (quoted 26.1M) figure in the lower corner. that figure, iirc, is the size the file would occupy if saved as a PSD. so adding layers etc and the figure grows.

Thanks. I knew it was not easy. I think I am better not knowing.

I really do not know how I have managed all these years when I don't understand file sizes.
