  • 'puters for photographers

I've just ordered a new 'puter, won't tell you what is is just yet, but wondered what other peoples opinions were as to the requirements for a machine aimed specifically at photographers.

The market is flooded with different machines, especially laptops which are frankly, bargains at the present time. I've been using a Laptop machine as my Desktop for approx the last 2-3 years. However my own feeling is that many of these 'budget' machines will be found wanting by photographers using large file sizes produced by todays cameras.

I'm probably different to the average 'puter user who needs a machine for home and family use, but my current lappy was a pretty hi spec machine when I bought it, but now, with the demands I put on it, I find it restricts me somewhat and so I decided to upgrade.

So, to recap, what do people think is going to do the business for a photographer. What would be your 'wishlist'?

At least 2gigs of RAM, nice big hard drive, dual core processor. (and no Apple logo on the front!) Vista operating system.
Nice big 22inch screen would be nice as well.....obviously a DVD burner.

So man of mystery, when does your Power Mac arrive?

Apart from the 22" screen these things have become standard on a lot of machines. So what going to set these apart from a photographers ideal machine

          Re: 'puters for photographers

When in Lake Garda recently I saw a man using a Mac with a VERY wide screen. It looked so sexy with hardly any wires. Such clean and clear lines.

I'd like a fast (mine's quite fast) computer with at least 2 Gig of RAM a wide screen so that the photoshop palates could be well to one side and still leave sufficient room for the pics without any overlap. The very best quality too.

A space for my external hard drive. I would like a processor that carried out multi tasks without slowing down.

          I don't think I want a lap top.

Easily accessible USB ports. DVD burner.

Nice. I'm not jealous..at all, no, I'm not... I'm quite happy with my Fujitsu Siemens Comet special.

Ain't technology marvellous, Apple certainly turn out some innovative kit.

Trouble is, no-one else with a "normal" monitor will see your pictures at the same level of quality as you will!

They are very pretty though. I'd like one - even to look at.

                      My ideal PC:

                      Silent in operation

                      Self cleaning

                      Self-calibrating monitor

                      Small and compact

Quad core processing that actually works

Secure online backups for archived photos

                        OOOHHHHH! AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!
Do you think we should sell the idea to the computer companies or just build one ourselves? You could be a very rich man! Sounds perfect!

Hells teeth man, you have a coffee machine right next to your 'puter atm. You have enough server space at present to upload your archive to. As for Quad core processing, is there any software that can take advantage of it yet?

Now the iMac is small and compact, it just has a big screen, which you gorra admit is brilliant. Its also pretty dammed quiet when running. Heck you had several turbo style fans in your last desktop

As for Self Cleaning, well I clean it myself a flick with a duster now and again anyway.

Self calibrating monitor, I'll just stick the Spyder on it once a month whilst I'm making a coffee

Anyroad up, I think I've ordered a pretty sexy 'puter, now if only it would wash the mugs out too

There is nothing sexy about a bloke with a Mac! Some flashy Mac blokes get arrested y'know.

I loathe coffee. I just drink water and eat chocolate chip muffins whilst the Spyder does the work.

So how about all your software? Do you need to replace it all with Mac versions?

Very little actually, my recently purchased copy of CS3 should be able to be changed for a mac version, and the Lightroom disc comes with a Mac version on it too. These are the main things, and others I will have to get as and when. Its surprising just how much software you actually get as part of the operating system. One of the most annoying ones is that my Accounts program does not have a Mac version,so that will have to run on the lappy, or if I install XP on the Mac I can use it on there.
