  • Vista & Messenger problem

Julia's laptop is now running Vista and there have been few problems since the switch from XP - it runners a lot better, cerainly cooler using the 'balanced' power setting.

But there is a new problem - Windows Live Messenger has stopped working. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but without luck. A look in the task manager shows that two Messenger processes are running at the same time - I wonder if this means there are two damaged installations (maybe a registry problem?) competing with each other?

The issue seems to also cause another issue - it can sometimes take forever for the system to log-off when shutting down. I have noticed that when I uninstall Messenger, log-off is no longer delayed.

All useful suggestions welcomed (I'm not going to install Linux though )

Now I have uninstalled Windows Live Messenger (8.1) I see that there is a MSN Messenger process in Task Manager. Should that be there?

Sorry Ian, can't be of much help here 'cos I don't use Messenger. There is something wrong with your se though because I understand Windows Live Messenger to be the replacement for MSN Messenger, so they shouldn't both be there.

I have disabled msnmsgr in msconfig and am now reinstalling Windows Live Messenger for the umpteenth time - fingers crossed.

The very strange thing is that WLM was running fine until a week or so ago...

Nope - that hasn't worked. I try to run WLM and nothing appears to happen, but a second msnmsgr.exe service appears in the task manager

I can close one, but not both services in the task manager.

              Re: Vista & Messenger problem

use the previous version of messenger{url=http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e010f88f-8574-4562-af6d-48dd23026b9d&DisplayLang=en]clicky[/url]

be sure to remove the old version first, restart and all that.

This should solve the problem for the mean time, at least until microshaft sort the problem out.
