Apart from thinking about upgrading my camera & lenses (see this thread: http://dpnow.com/forum2/showthread.php?t=3080 ) I'm also going to upgrade my 3 year old desktop PC; mainly because the motherboard is limited to 2GB of RAM (I only have 1GB at the moment) and I just can't be bothered with upgrading the motherboard and re-installing all the components - been there, done that, don't have the time for the inevitable problems. I have a reasonably good work laptop (tablet) that I, *ahem*, misappropriate when necessary
so I'm going to stick with a desktop at home.
I work in IT so I'm comfortable with the hardware side apart from choosing a monitor specifically for photo editing.
My current monitor is a 19" HP1965 (non wide-screen) which has 300 nits (!) brightness, a 1000:1 contrast ratio, a native resolution of 1280 x 1024, and a 6 ms response time. It also has DVI & analogue capability although my current video card is analogue only. Finally, there's a built in USB hub which I find useful but not essential.
I don't really have a problem with this monitor but I remember that it was a staggering improvement over my previous PC World bundled monitor and I guess I might see another leap in quality if I buy something more up-market?
I'm assuming wide-screen will be the best option and will allow me to get those PhotoShop palettes out of the way of the image (OK, I know I can use the tab key!) and, from experience at work, I know that a DVI connection is generally better than analogue, so the new video card will have digital out.
So, anyone care to recommend a monitor?
As a matter of interest (perhaps!), the current PC will be re-deployed as a test-bed for the new Windows Home Server software (I'm a beta-tester) and this new OS something all serious photographers might like to consider when it's released (leter this year I think) go here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro...r/default.mspx for more details.
