  • Information required re New Laptop

My son has asked me what the best Laptop would be for his requirements.

    He has seen this: http://www.dealtime.co.uk/xPF-Toshib...7-Inch-Display

The processor is only 1.6 Mhz. This seems low compared to my PC which is 3.00 Mhz, but perhaps laptops are different. I have never had one.

He wonders if I think it would be suitable for him. I told him "I didn't know but I may know some men who do. "

He is a self employed H&S Trainer and runs courses at all levels mainly for the Construction Industry all over the UK.

He uses Powerpoint. He said he has 500 to 1000 on one program. I thought that this seemed a lot. He said he may not use all of it on one day, but because I don't know Powerpoint I don't really understand this.

His slides are mainly animated so requires the best (graphics card? or whatever) to handle these animations. He also plays DVDs, but I don't know whether this is integrated within the program.

He obviously needs a 'Top Laptop' as this is his Livelihood.

When he first started on his own he bought an Aldi (Medion or Tevion) Laptop which lasted for years, but they only come in periodically and the last one Aldi had in did not perform as well as his original, so he returned it.

His current (don't know the make) is becoming worn out and is too slow for his requirements - his wife will inherit it, the boys had the Aldi one.

Can you please tell me what you would recommend.

    Thanks.
    Audrey

Re: Information required re New Laptop

      Thanks Ian.

I said to my son that although it was only 1.6 GHz that it might be as powerful as 3 GHz because we had this discussion with regard to my husband's computer some time ago. However, I did not know whether it was the same for a laptop.

Although I sent a Dealtime Link, I just clicked on "Any Old Link" that was advertising that Laptop. The spec he gave me did have 2 Gb RAM.

Thanks a lot for the info Ian. I will pass your info on to him.

        Hi Audrey,

I would recomend visiting the Dell Factory Outlet, its where I bought my Tower PC from:

Dell provides technology solutions, services & support. Buy Laptops, Touch Screen PCs, Desktops, Servers, Storage, Monitors, Gaming & Accessories

as for graphics card, to run the graphics on a Powerpoint slide deck, you really dont need a cutting edge graphics card, they are more for serious gamers playing high intensity graphics, multi-user games, so dont worry too much about that side.

By the way, if you mean 500 to 1000 slides on one presentation.....I am glad I am not in the construction industry thats a lot of slides

If you buy a laptop with a DVD writer, it will definately have the ability to play DVD's built in.

Out of interest, what is the specifacation of his old one, and has he tried rebuilding it.

Quite often what happens is when you have a pc for long periods of time, you install, delete, re-install programs etc, and this can result in the laptop slowing up.

Also, laptops have a habbit of picking up dust, as the cooling systems are quite limited, processors work better the cooler thay are, so if they are getting hot, this can also result in the system slowing, so cleaning the dust out may also help.

By the way, Sony Vaios are very good, but pricey.....just another for you to look at.

Finally, you may find this website usefull, might be an idea to send it to your son for perusal:

The latest technology news and reviews, covering computing, home entertainment systems, gadgets and more

        Happy hunting!

It would be nice if it had SVHS output so you can plug it into a big screen. Great for presentatins...and Karaoke, which is what we do at home with my daughters Vaio. Highly recommend the Vaio, nicely bit of kit.

I know he will go for one with a suitable connection because all his slides are projected on to a big screen.
