  • Sorry Vista again!!

I dont no if it has been mentioned, but you will need a system drive, or c drive partition of atleast 15 gig, I no most people if they have partitioned there drive for xp will probly have about 10gig for there c drive, its not enough, you will not be able to do the upgrade from xp without re formatting and starting from scratch, which means loosing everything, unless you save the important stuff to drive or disc-obviously.

If you dont have your drive partitioned which is mostly the case with new purchased pc's then ignore the above.
Also if you have onboard graphics, you will almost certainly have problems, vista is very graphic intensive, so a dedicated graphics card is a must.
Ive had the pleasure of setting up a friends laptop with vista and it actually looks quiete good.
If I come across anything else you may find helpful I will let you no.
    cheers

My understanding is that the partition of that size is only required for the installation process. The storage requirement is a lot less once the installation is over - I think rogleale will confirm this?

This is true, and for the smooth running and installation of additional software, it would be advised to have 15 gig at least.
I have just installed vista ultimate and it has swallowed 10 gig.
Ill keep you posted on anything I find of interest.

It is true, Vista is a space gobbler. I did a clean install, and after installing a few extras which perform better from the 'C' partition, True Image, Firefox, etc., it is using 15 GB! If you are someone who lets all the other desired programmes install themselves to 'C', at least 30 GB would be advisable. My 'F' partition, where I have installed things like Photoshop, Lightroom, Qimage, Mailwasher, etc., is already at >7 GB.

I have to amend that! Vista reports that 15 GB is used, but checking the actual folder sizes in use gives: Windows 8 GB; Programmes 1.2 GB; Users 2.7 GB; a grand total of 11.9GB. Vista has obviously spread itself out because there is lots of spare room in the 54 GB partition 'C', and presumably could manage with less.
So a 15 GB partition 'C' might well be enough unless Vista complains about there not being enough room to de-frag.
