Extending Drive

I am trying to extend my backup drive 'G'. I have done this sort of thing before, but I just can't get my head around the instructions.

I have some unallocated space - 100 Gb but it is not next to the Drive I am trying to extend.

I have Easeus and of course the Windows 7 inbuilt software, but when I tried to use it I got an error message.

I am attaching a screengrab.

Please can you help me to get the unallocated space into drive 'G'. I do know how to change a Drive letter if necessary.

Anyway, it's amazing what happens when you sleep on a problem. Got up this morning and did it. Everything's working fine now.

That's great to hear. I would have helped if I could, but I dropped Windows many years ago and moved to Linux and more recently to a mixture of Linux and Macs.

It would be nice to know how you did it, though.

I used Easeus (a free download).

You have to shrink the appropriate Drive (from where you want to transfer your space).

When you shrink a drive you drag the slider to the size you want but the free space was not on the correct side. I had not realised that you can drag the slider from the left or right thus creating the unallocated space on either side.


The Drives to be shrunk and increased need to be adjacent. I had another Drive in between. I gave the Drive in between a new Drive Letter further down the alphabet. So that it moved beyond the two in question thus allowing me to carry out the shrinking and increasing.

When I first worked out what I had to do, it was quite easy and quick. I did what I wanted and could see the result, but you did not finalise it until you clicked Apply (or something). Actually it's a Preview.

Once I had the Drive in question enlarged, I moved the Drive Letters back.

I use B for Backup, D for Documents, M for Music, P for Photographs.

There is also a Drive Management Program within Windows 7.

I sometimes find myself on the verge of running out of drive letters. Once you've switched on several external drives, some of which have card reader slots (printers even have these nowadays), and you mount a few virtual drives, you quickly realise how few letters there are in the alphabet.
