  • Dell nears buyout!

I thought they were in good shape but ...

Dell Inc is edging closer to an agreement to sell itself to a buyout consortium led by Michael Dell, its founder and chief executive, and private equity firm Silver Lake Partners in a deal that could top $24 billion, people familiar with the matter said on Friday.

I think all PC manufacturers are struggling. People are not upgrading their PCs as frequently as they used to and money that would have contributed to a new PC is now being diverted to purchases of tablets. Intel has reported lower sales of PC processors, for example.

Will Michael Dell make a difference back at the controls?

My current laptop, which I have had for a few months now, is a Dell and I'm generally very pleased with it because a) it's very fast (Core i7 CPU) and it was very cheap (£450) because I bought it through the Dell outlet store - lots of bargains if you look hard.

But in general I do find Samsung, Asus, Sony and even HP PC designs to be more inspiring.

I've looked in the Dell Outlet several times in the past, but they always seemed to be out of stock or only offering a very few models that didn't suit me (admittedly I only tend to look at portable/laptops rather than desktops). The Dell US Outlet seemed to be far better stocked than our one.

I think I started drifting away from Dell a few years back when I bought my netbook. Dell wasn't offering anything similar and, when they did, they just did what everyone else did - and went for the cheap components/high end price option. I've not really been back since.
