    Re: Looking for monitor advice

I think we have a common mind on this - display manufacturers need to be much clearer about the technologies and standards for their products. I found myself getting very frustrated when speccing a new laptop recently, which I reflected in my blog post here:

      Re: Looking for monitor advice

I've just read that blog, and that's a similar minefield.

I've been looking at a laptop for myself. I don't have the funds yet but I'm so out of the loop that I need to start like a newbie. The first thing that trips me up is the processors these days. What happened to the old days of just picking a speed, a number of cores, and a chunk of RAM?

There's all this dual core, quad core, core duo, core duo 2, core i3, core i5, core i7, different specifications of each one, and differences between desktop and laptop versions of each.

The last "new" laptop I bought (not counting netbooks) was an old Windows 98 laptop with a P3 500/600MHz CPU and 128MB RAM. Now I look at possible laptops and I'm facing a wall of obfuscation.

It's like they've specifically gone out of their way to prevent the consumer from making an educated decision about what they need. So, like with the many weeks I deliberated over a monitor, it's going to be a good few months before I buy a laptop because it'll take that long to work out what all of the jargon means.

        Re: Looking for monitor advice

Earlier this year, I purchased a used ASUS PA238Q monitor to use with my MacBook Pro. I have been very pleased, and it is worth a look. The new price is around $260.

One complaint people have with this monitor is edge bleed, but I have not found it to be a problem in normal use.

Firstly thanks for all the input and especially to JSR.

After much trawling the various review websites (some eight+ hours) I have settled on the monitor JSR uses the Dell U2412M.

I shall order the beastie at months end unless something hits the marketplace with a bigger wow factor.
