  • Win8 Consumer Preview - now available but

Got a newsletter from MS saying Windows 8 Consumer Preview is now available for DL.
The big difference between Win7 and Win8 seems to be mailnly the touch interface with some other minor (?) improvements.

I downloaded the Win8 CP but noticed that once you change it from Win7/Vista (or even XP) to Win8 CP, there's no way to go back to the previous OS, unless you use the recovery disk/re-install of the previous ones.

So I stopped there and now thinking if or not it's worth doing at this moment.
The reputation of the CP is not very good. In short, tedious to use ...

    Any advice will be appreciated.

Hi Yoshi - so you have a touch screen PC? My laptop can convert to a tablet mode and has a touch screen, but it's not a capacitive screen so only one finger can be used at a time. I'm intending to upgrade to a capacitive multi-touch screen notebook so I can use Windows 8.

From the above would I be right in thinking that without a touch screen Win 8 would have no benefits whatsever to a current Win 7 user.
Also don't like the idea of not being able to revert back to Win7 without the disc!

My understanding is that the most visible difference with Win8 is the tile-based user-interface - optimised for touch screens but compatible with your mouse, but the original style UI is still there if you wish and for application compatibility. I read that boo times are faster, system security is better, for laptop users the sleep/hibernate system is more responsive, there is closer integration with Microsoft cloud services (Windows Live). Windows 8 will also launch with an ARM CPU version for compact long battery life Netbooks and tablets. At the end of the day, Windows 7 is already very good and if you are happy with that I would say wait for a while and see what others discover about Windows 8.

            I think I will too.
For my Win7 machine I would perhaps not install Win8, even if the final version becomes available.
As I still use Vista machines as well, I would probably install on one of them at least Win8 together with SSD.

A bit disappointed that Win8 is not a breakthrough innovative OS (other than the touch interface.) - maybe developed mainly in view of the use in commuting train or something?
Being not that young , I regard screen same as lens. You should not touch it.
