  • 5.25" diskette - readable?

Is there any good method/means to read 5.25-inch floppy diskettes? (not 3.75" ones)

I found several months ago both 5.25" and 3.75" floppy disks in a few carton boxes. - plenty of them.

I could find and get an external USB floppy disk drive for the 3.75", for yen 500 (USD 6; UK 4 pounds).
But for 5.25", I almost gave up looking for a similar one.

I'm almost sure that none of the files are important. But from 3.75" disks I found my life plan that was made more than 20 years ago in the late 80's and it was fun in a sense to read it now.
If it happens to be possible to read 5.25" disks again, I would be glad.

    Hi Yoshi

Is this the type of thing you are looking for:

alternatively these people will transfer your data for $5 a floppy disk

    Hope this helps.

Many thanks for the info Audrey.

The link makes me recall the name Tandon which I have forgotten for years. I once bought a Tandon 5.25" floppy disk drive for the IBM PC, my first PC.
I ordered it to a Radio Shack (?) or so in US as the second disk drive but , I could not install it. (no knowledge then and no connection cable/harness was publicly available here)
It must be somewhere unused but not here.

That memory also reminds me that I have to be careful about the format style differences. (the IBM style and non-IBM styles. no compatibility )
Will look into the matter with due patience. In case of 5.25" floppy disks, it seems it's more complicated than I first thought.

OTH your message also gives me an idea that some tiny shops in a large city might still sell quite old PC's as junk.
If I can find one that is still functioning and is reasonably priced, then there might be still a hope.
So I decided to keep the 5.25" disks for a while. I can throw them away anytime.

Thanks a lot for giving me another perspective. Now there's still hope. I just need a bit of patience until I come across it.

          Hi Kurt,
You make me feel as if I were a living fossil. Yes, of course, I am. --- Not very often but I still use film cameras for fun and in order to make it sure that they are in a good shape.

For French children, a 5.25" flopply disk is a fan or an older type of CD!
What they would say when they look at films, I wonder.

The manner they treated the (music) record (plate) - it just gives me a shock and almost makes me shout "hey, don't do that, please!"

Thanks for the very interesting link. I find it enjoyable and surely amusing. I like those French humours.

It makes me understand that the (technology and other) world is really swiftly changing and mutal communication across the generations is getting difficult due to lack of common experiences. I am determined to pretend to be young (at heart).

I loved the fact that they thought a 3.25" floppy disk might be a camera!
