An external mic should solve this problem but I have to say that my experience of using built in microphones in cameras for video, including NEX cameras, is that you should not be having volume problems in normal use.
What are you normally recording - what kind of scene are you videoing?
I have recorded a piece of me playing guitar. When played back seemed poor on the camera...however, when I transferred it to PC...OK...Problem solved. Ian
