  • Canon 70-200mm F4 IS USM L

    Dear all,

I have the sigma 70-200 EX F2.8 but have hardly used it as it just so heavy. On Friday I purchased the Canon 70-200mm F4 IS USM L and it was a dream. It stayed on my camera for moist of my day in London. It was light, sharp and focussed quickly. Am going to ebay the F2.8 sigma. I really recommend the canon hence my post.

Here is a jpeg converted from raw with no changes at all.

and here is a processed version with sharpening.

    best regards

Interesting post. Surprised it hasn't generated any other comments. How does the Sigma sharpness compare with the Canon at a comparable aperture?

I found the IS on the F4 very noisy with a kind of grating sound. My F2.8 doesn't have IS so I can't compare. However my 100-400 does and it has a much more refined IS being quiet and extremely efficient. Looking through the viewfinder when the IS kicks in us uncanny

        Hi

I was using the 70-200 F4 today. I saw Stephens post (whilst I was out) re grating of IS and really listened for it. Really didn't think it was that noisy.

Anyway I now have pictures of the same subject at both F4 and F8 taken with cannon 70-200 F4 and the sigma 70-200 F2.8. If someone could give guidance I am happy to post comparison pics or even email them.

        Best Regards

I think the IS noise is mainly relative

If you could choose sections cropped at 100%, that would be a good start, thanks.

            Hi

I am using PSE7. How do you crop at 100%?

            Thanks

OK, as a rough guide, set the view to 100%, then crop a portion of the image that fits OK into the web browser window. Save the crop at around 80% quality on the JPEG compression setting (use Save As, not Save for Web).

                Hi,

Hope I get this right. All shots taken using a tripod and timer to minimise shake potential. No processing at all. Pictures taken in raw and converted to jprg in lightroom.

So here is a cropped 100% - sigma at 70 mm F4 first. then the canon

and now at F8. Sigma first then canon.

Interesting. In the first pair, the top one has more contrast, and in the second pair the last one is quite a bit darker.

I got rid of my Canon 70-200 f2.8L for the f4 L IS and have had no regrets. This past winter, I used it with the 5D for doing Hockey Portraits and the images were sparkling!
