dead canon 300d

anyone experienced this problem?

the 300d died a few weeks ago. gave up the ghost at the start of a rugby match (my other half was using it). thought it was the usual occasional freeze up. remove battery, re-insert. switch on, back display only shows EOS and gets no further.
tried all the usual - remove all batteries, lenses, cards. leave it without power for a week etc, all to no avail.

reluctant to send for a repair as it'll likely cost more than a 2nd hand one.

Have you tried hitting it with a hammer

Failing that I'd invest in a 30D or even bite the bullet and go for a 1DMk2N

Canon wanted 200quid for a repair on a 300D, which I felt was far too much!

My shutter went on the 300D a few months, and I bit the bullet, and decided to pay a little extra and get the 350D.

I know Jessops are offering 0% interest at the moment. Go for the 400D! (or 30D as Stephen suggested if your feeling particularly flush just before Christmas)

Wonder if it's worth having a go at downloading the Canon software for it or even the hacked Wasia version, putting that on a CF card then starting the camera up to see if it reloads the software, if you can't find either of them let me know and I can mail them to you as I have them on my Hard Drive somewhere.

hi all,

thanks for all the replies. however it's now working again. although i have no idea why. left it unpowered for about 10 days, just (as in half an hour ago) inserted a battery to see and it fired up. prompted me for date etc so looks like its finally reset itself, yet still retains my custom function settings. all round weirdness. glad i didn't chuck it in the bin now!

gotasmilk - it is using the wasia firmware, but thanks for the offer anyway. i'm sure at some point i'd have tried re-flashing the firmware, but looks like there's no need for this now.

Glad it's working again, I have just read else ware that a 30D has gone much the same way after being out at the beach on a cold damp day, it's also being left to see what happens.

Only if they can read and write.

I contemplated changing to a Canon 30D a whle ago 'cos I was fed up waiting for Pentax to release an upgrade. I'm glad I hung on as they've finally announced the K10D which should be on the shelves any day now...... though I'm not rushing out to get one. I'm waiting to see the verdict of those who get one, then I may or may not consider it next year.

I fancy the idea of the weather proofed (probably better described as weather-resistant) body + in-camera AD and IS.
