I read an interesting article of BCN. It is about co-relation between market share of body(brand)
and that of lens-mount. Again, in Japanese market.
# The first pie chart shows market share of body classified by brand for the month of November.
One point is new to me. That is, Panasonic is the third and Sony is the fourth. Apparently Panny's
G1 is included in this category (dSLR).
From 12 o'clock, clockwise, Nikon (38.1%), Canon (36.6%), Panasonic (9.4%), Sony (7.1), others (8.8%)
# What is more interesting to me is the second pie chart. This shows the market share of lenses classified by mount. Also for November.
So Canon = EF mount
Nikon = F mount
Panasonic = Four-thirds
Sony = Alpha mount
Pentax= K mount (KAF2 is the current type) ...
Here the first is Canon (42.4%), the second Nikon (29.9%) and the third Pentax (18.4%), followed by Sony (8.9%) and Four-thirds (7.8%). The four-thirds should include both Oly and Panasonic in the second chart.
It should be noted that in case of the third party lens suppliers such as Tamron,
their lenses are classifed according to the mount. So, for example, Tamron lens for Canon is included in the EF
mount, while the same Tamron lens for Nikon is classified into F mount, and so on.
So the market share of body is not directly reflected in the lens market share. Maybe due to time lag?
I wish BCN makes similar report based on much longer period of analysis (preferably one year or more if possible).
Just one month data is not statistically significant, IMHO. Maybe they issue detailed report to subscribers
such as retailers and manufacturers only?
***********
BCN continues further analysis for the top 2 mounts, i.e. Canon and Nikon, and lists top 10
popular lenses in the market. 60% of them are zoom lenses, which are also surprising to me in
a sense as I thought it must be much higher than that. Fixed focal lenses (such as 50mm/1.4) are coming back?
