  • 5D MkII video footage.....stunning

Anyone interested in just how good the video from the new Canon 5DMkII should check out this brilliant short film by Vincent Laforet

Obviously the film is enhanced by some great editing and pro models etc., but it does show great low light capability and almost 3D like sequences. The addition of this new ability in the 5D must be potentially a great tool for photographers.

That certainly looks impressive - the dog's proverbials spring to mind! Still not sure I would use the video facility (well not to start with ), don't seem to have enough fingers and brain capacity to cope with a stills camera! But, never say never....

    Thanks for the link Stephen.

Very impessive, I was into camcorders before I took up photography but at the time nothing would come close to that. Its that good it might tempt some to move over to canon
It would be interesting to no if anybody has done anything like that with the
d90 to show off its potential!
        cheers

I can see the wedding togs having a field day with this. I would say that this camera is right up their street full frame and now with video added it will sell like hot cakes. Nikon have the d90 and canon now have the 5dmk2 with this function in it this is only the thin end of the wedge I think it will end up like live view soon they will all have it. I also have a video camera but have not used it in years. I have taken it away with me a few times but always end up using the slr over the video camera. So when all the cameras have it then it may boast how people use video when they only have to take out one camera.

I think Monsieur Laforet's production is superb, but I feel duty boundy to point out that he worked around the obvious shortcomings of the 5D Mark II's video mode and these would also apply to the Nikon D90; no autofocus, and no aperture changing auto exposure, plus no decent quality stereo sound recording capability.

The basic HD image recording quality looks ace, but the video cleverly side-steps all the issues I have listed above.

I have been predicting a real convergence of still and video, but I don't yet see it properly implemented in the D90 and 5D Mark II. Both remain DSLRs with HD movie recording bolted on.

The Panasonic DMC-G HD (below) interchangeable lens Micro Four Thirds camera, on the other hand, promises onboard stereo recording, plus special movie mode lenses that autofocus smoothly and quietly for movie recording and, I understand, will be able to adjust exposure via a seamlessly changing aperture during movie recordings.

It also has a 3 inch articulating screen.
