  • Another Pentax Interview

I'm on a trip now for phototaking but (as usual ?) it rains a lot in the past few days so just dropped by an i-net cafe and read this which I think is worth sharing.

This is an interview article of a Pentax person named Kitazawa and the interview was made by dc.watch interviewer(Honda-san) at Photokina.

Just a summary. Major portion of the article is about the newly announced K-m but let me allow to focus on other subjects which IMHO look like more interesting to more people.

    *************
    - Pentax replaces the existing two models, K20D and K200D, in summer 2009. The successors are also APS-C models.

    - A model with FF sensor could be a future choice but Pentax has NOT started actual R&D for it. Pentax is of the opinion that APS-C sensor cameras can have as good IQ as FF models taking into account the on-going technology progress. The sensor (brand) for the successors are not yet determined though. Incidentally he said the sensor used on the K-m is a Sony. (same as K200D) and not Samsung.

-He confirmed here again that 645D (medium format dSLR) has a higher priority for Pentax than a FF model and that the R&D has already resumed by now. He firmly believes that many of so-called FF lovers would surely eventually choose a medimu format DSLR like 645D when IQ is the pivotal point of choice/decision making.

    - He estimates that some middle class models users will go to FF segments. To put it another way, he foresees higher percentage of high-end models (incl. FF of course) in future (currently it is said to be 5% - all brands included, of course) - but instead the middle class will shrink. All in all, the combined share of high end and middle class models would remain same as now, which is around 30%. The rest 70% will be continuously occupied by the enty class models. Pentax plans to have multiple models for this segment. K200D is the highest model among this segment and the K-m is the middle. (I understand he implied one more model under K-m sub-segment.)

p.s. I forgot to add. The movie mode is also under R&D. He says it is important to have it. The problem to be solved is the sound issue. The microphone is on the camera so it gets all those noisy sounds from camera body - such as AF motor, mirror movement, etc. etc.

    Thanks yoshi -

It seems we are still seeking the Holy Grail regardless of cost (maybe).
