Sony reveals Alpha 900 full frame flagship DSLR

I'm typing this from the European press launch in Edinburgh and the camera has just been unveiled.

It looks much like the unnamed prototype version seen at the last two Photokina shows.

Key points:

Alpha 900
5 fps 24.6 megapixel Exmor cmos sensor
Dual Bionz image processors

SteadyShot Inside image stabiliiser - enhanced sensor shift IS.
850g body is relatively light
New lenses:
G-series 70-400mm f4-5.6
16-35 mm 2.8 Carl Zeiss Vario Sonnar SSM (sonic AF)
An engineer from Japan is now giving us a tour of the technolgy...

Sounds pretty impressive Ian, even to the extent that it may eclipse any announcement from Canon about a 5D replacement, which surely is imminent.

Sensor is capable of resolving 3300 lines compared to 2300 lines with a 12mp sensor.

Duncan McEwan, Scottish landscape photographer, has had an Alpha 900 to use for the last two weeks and he is now telling about his experience. Interestingly, he's a dyed in the wool Minolta SLR film user

Indeed, but you will have to factor in the battery grip for more realistic comparison the Canon 1D series of course have them as part of the body. Will be interesting to see though how it compares with the 5D replacement on price

Just been told the official European price is 2800 Euros. (body only)

At the same price-point as the Nikon D700, is Sony trying to prove that megapixels are still a significant ingredient of the purchase decision?

If my arithmetic is correct, the Nikon D700 is a fair bit cheaper than the Alpha 900. I think maybe you meant a comparison with the Nikon D3?
