  • Confused Canon user - focus distance visble!

I'm not the only one on here (and other forums) that has bemoaned the fact that focus distance is not shown in an image's EXIF data when shot using a Canon DSLR (well certainly with my 40D and 350D before it).

However, I've just looked, using Windows Picture and Fax viewer, at one of my images (RAW processed to jpg) that I emailed to myself at work and if I right click the image and go to properties (advanced) it's there! Subject Distance = 2.2m!? I swear I've not seen this before? (I only looked at the properties to see what shutter speed I'd used).

    Am I going mad?

The pic was shot using a Canon 40D and Canon 100-400mm zoom BTW. I'll have to wait until I get home tonight to check some other shots.

Thinking about it, subject distance is important in terms of correcting lens distortion in my RAW software, DxO (it's a PITA setting it manually for every shot) but it (DxO) doesn't have a module for the 40D / 100-400mm zoom (which is bizarre!) so perhaps its been there all along and it's because it's a "pro" lens?

Time for lunch and a google session I think....
