  • N&C: DSLR market share

this is about Japanese market. (and dSLR)
BCN's recent reports say Canon and Nikon had almost similar market share in the first half of this calendar year.

    N: 40.7% vs. Canon 40.6%

For the month of July; N: 42.0% vs. C:37.1%

D700 was introduced on July 25th and it has reportedly contributed to N's market share, although it was almost the end of the month. D700 was ranked at #5 of the top 10 models with 5.6%.

The big two have jointly nearly 80% market share which shows a slight decline compared to last year, iirc. Sony seems to be the real eater of the market share this year. They got; March 9.5%, June 10.4% and July 11.7% (the highest for them this year). Alpha 300 introduced in July contributed to the July result. It is assumed by many (not BCN), the trend will continue. - but how long? - no plausible comments were found, to my regret.

p.s. AFAIK, BCN has not issued detailed report atm. So no further info about others.

Canon really do appear to have surrendered their dominant digital position in the market place, from being the clear and unquestioned number one.
How much of their market share is retained because the buyer is already committed too the Canon system and are simply upgrading?
The gains Nikon have made on Canon I suspect are largely photographers buying their first DSLR and if that is the case Nikon are becoming, or have become, number one.
It also appears Canon are losing share not just to Nikon but also Sony, while the effect on Nikon's share by Sony is minimal.
Sony do seem to be breaking away from the also rans and will I'm sure become a much bigger player in the DSLR market in the coming years. I also think the two big boys should be keeping a close watch on Samsung for the future.

      Re: N&C: DSLR market share

Interestingly my local camera shop dismissed Sony entering the market as "just a toe in the water". He felt they could leave as quickly as they came. This might have something to do with the fact that Sony is not supporting local camera dealers. A dealer who used to sell lots of Minolta gear can now not get a response from Sony, so he tells me, so he is pushing Pentax/Samsung now. I used to buy my Minolta gear from him but now I use the internet.
The older I get the better I used to be!
