RUMOURS! - Nikon D3X and D300

As usual for FUN only:

while I was lurking a rumor site yesterday, a guy just mentioned that the coming Nikon D300 was just superb and far exceeds the coming Canon 40D.
A usual another rumor, maybe from a Nikon fanboy with no specific information - I thought. BUT somehow I tried to search more and found another rumor site/blog I've never been. The followings are excerpts from that one - well I admit I though it interesting.

-two models and five lenses to be announced on Aug.23rd at 13:00 at Japan time:

D3X:
"FX" format [looks like it means Full Frame] 12Mp CMOS sensor made by Nikon
9 fps - 11 fps possible when cropped to DX format size (that is APS-C size)
ISO 200-6400: adjustable to Lo 1 (ISO 100 equivalent) , Hi 2 (ISO 25600 equivalent)

D300:
DX format [APS-C size] 12 Mp CMOS (no reference here whether it is made by Nikon or not- anyway the sensor size is different from the D3X)
6 fps - 8 fps with battery grip (no cropping here)
ISO 200-3200: adjustable to Lo 1 (ISO 100 equivalent), Hi 1 (ISO 6400 equivalant)

For the both models:
AF: 51 AF points: 15 of which are cross type sensors
Live View: when live view is on, "contrast AF" is used.


Five lenses: all AF-S type

AF-S Nikkor 14-24mm F2.8G
AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm F2.8G
AF-S VR Nikkor 400mm F2.8G
AF-S VR Nikkor 500mm F4G
AF-S VR Nikkor 600mm F4G

This is all very interesting, Yoshi - thank you for providing this information.

It does sound quite similar to the rumoured Sony Alpha new model specifications and of course Nikon and Sony are working very closely to compete with Canon.

Not sure if this is real or not but a pic of D3X I found today.
The letters in the middle just say some specifications I already mentioned.

Need to be a bit cautious about its authenticity - but again the "leak marketing" is getting so popular especially in the camera industry. It's quite different now from the so called teaser campaign in older days.

The letters used in the messages however look like harsh work, not like Nikon's quality job, IMHO.

In 3 more days we know it.

Need to be a bit cautious about its authenticity - but again the "leak marketing" is getting so popular especially in the camera industry. It's quite different now from the so called teaser campaign in older days.

The letters used in the messages however look like harsh work, not like Nikon's quality job, IMHO.

In 3 more days we know it.

If this is true the competition is really hotting up, it also means that pricing will have to be tight. Perhaps we may start to see new cameras in the popular section start at reasonable prices instead of the pattern we have seen in recent years of starting high and being heavily discounted after about 3-6 months.

All interesting stuff.

Never mind Sony, it's Nikon that will be making announcements on Thursday. Sony won't be until your expedition to Hadrian's wall - so now you know why I'll be in Italy

Was on the Nikonians D200 forum today and the scuttlebutt from America is that many online stores and shops do not have the D200 in-stock. Now I know why.

I'm a bit inclined to say the pic does not look like real. I continued the search
and found similar pics like this one. The Japanese language used on some of them are somewhat funny - like my English here. Highly possible the pics are related to a Hong Kong rumour site.

About the rumors in the original post, I'm still looking forward to finding if or not real. The rumours and the pic are from different Japanese sites respectively.

Rumours, Rumours .
While i think Nikon will bring out a replacement for the D2X either later this year or early next , i don't reckon it will be a F/F .
Too many many people have invested thousands in DX lenses and Nikon won't gain any extra custom from them .
They might very well bring out a F/F as a partner to the D3 but why ? , most Nikon users are happy with the picture quality of 2/3 .
And with lenses now going down to 10mm that negates the arguement that you lose on W/A lenses.
I'm hoping to replace my D2X soon , (over 100'000 shots so far) but not at the expense of replacing all my lenses

Hi Bob,
you have of course some good points there. Anyway just two more days to go!

Apart from the rumours, Nikon is said to be not simply satisfied in recent market share gains and aims at getting higher market share in the highend professonal segment as well. To be more specific, their target users are journalists and sports photographers. From Aug.25 we have here in Osaka IAAF World Championships in Athletics. So either the creater of the rumours or Nikon has chosen a right day for the said "annoucement". And of course, we have Olympic games next year. An opportunity for them that comes only once in every four years.

Nikon was once dominant in the journalists segment during film days and so so good at sports photographers segment. Do you remember F3H that had 11 fps during film days? - I do not remember exactly but it must be around the end of the 80's.

Of course, I understand on the other hand that this is why the rumours were created deliverately - as for those who know about Nikon during film days, it's hard to 100% deny the rumours.

The rumours I have seen suggest that the FF or APS-H (1.25x) future cameras will have a DX switch to enable DX lenses to be used in a sensor cropped mode.

The problem with that, from my point of view, is that it confirms that Nikon is sticking with its tiny lens mount for FF - which is not, technically, ideal.
