  • Canon 350d or 400d

    Hi Guys..

I came to a decision to not take the Nikon D40..

    but Rather a canon.

    I am considering a 400D body only, with a Sigma 18 - 200

Would you Guys say, that i should fork out the grand or two more, and Get the 400d... Rather that the 350d ?

And can anyone tell me good, or bad Stuff about this lens ?

Sigma Corporation of America is a subsidiary of the Sigma Corporation, a Japanese based family owned manufacturer of DSLR cameras, camera lenses and camera accessories. Founded in 1961, Sigma Corporation prides itself on high quality and innovative photographic equipment

    Help Will be Appreciated ?

    Thanks..

If the 350D is significantly cheaper than the 400D, I'd go for that. The one main advantage the 400D has over the 350D is a sensor cleaner, though reports say that it's not as effective as hoped. The 8MP to 10MP difference in resolution is something not to lose sleep over, while the 350D has a secondary LCD status screen that the 400D lacks, though the 400D does have a bigger colour LCD.

Not tried the 18-200 Sigma, but Photozone has tested it and the results seem about OK for a lens of this type.

Ian, you all know i'm a newby, So take this Question Where it comes from.

This Report, are you sure that this is the same lens, because according to the llocal shop, This lens is But only one month relesed ?

There are 2 of the 18 - 200 range.. but the one has a OS. (Optical Stabilizer)

This might not Add any thing towards the review though...

      Just wanted to know..

Thanks... So You would still consider a 350d....

Also, keep in mind, that i'm moving over from a canon S2 IS Compact Digital,

So I'm hoping that this 18 200 lens, will give me a "Ok" range tpo start of with.

Yes changing lenses can be a bind, and always at the least convenient moment. In truth my advice should be tempered by what your images will be used for.

If all you intend is to post to a web site or forum like this, doing the occasional A4 print for family and friends of a favorite image, the 18-200 may very well serve you best.
If however your intention is to eventually aim higher, printing to A3 for competition or exhibition work such an optic will start to prove less than ideal.

I have used a 55-200 Sigma DC and I wasn't at all impressed, I'm afraid. Very soft, even at the sweet spot of f/8, at the longer end of the range.

As I said I still believe the focal lengths its attempting is still to wide with too many compromises having to be made and at a fairly low price.
As you know Ian I'm a fan of the EX range of Sigma lenses rather than their cheaper glass.

Ok, So if you have to give me your advice on this,

i am at the moment def not intending on Doing any kind of Competion,

However what I will be Attempting..

Some Birds, Wildlife, Family Portraits, and then I want to try and go to Some Race tracks and Photograph these Cars around the Track.

Also, There is a Bungee site close by here, And I wanted to try and Photograph them.

i have not yet made up my mind, on witch Body, 350d or 400d.

And Also, The lenses at this poin I have no clue what to go for.

I Don't Think That in the next Year, i would enter a A3 Poster in a Comp.

                    Though ?

Some sound Help Would be Appreciated.

Also, This is lots of Money to Spend Once off, Thus the Reason for going for the 18 - 200... To give me Some "Playground" And then Later if I want to Spesialize in Some Direction, Get a lens just for that ?

However, I might be dissapointed by the Quality from That lens - However i'm used to a S2IS , So i'm not sure if I would be..

Sheesh... Why is this so Hard . . .

Lourensb is from South Africa, hence my though that the inflated prices there might make the 350D better value.

Nice choice. I went from the S2 IS in December and got a 400D. Love it to bits. Not used that lens, but don't be too wary of switching lenses once you get the bug (just don't do it in sand storm).
