  • a quick question

You have the chance to go out, but you can only take your camera with the one lens.

out of the lenses you have which one would you choose and why?

This is a question for dSLR users. Us with bridge or compacts have no choice.

      Re: a quick question

      Depends where I'm going.

In most cases it would be my Canon 17-85mm to give me a decent wide-angle to short telephoto range on my 350D (APS-C sensor). This is a great "walk about (around?)" lens that I bought to replace the original 18-55mm lens that came with the camera. Although not particularly fast, it has IS which really helps out in low light levels.

However, if I was going to the zoo, then I'd take my 70-300mm IS to allow me to isolate the subject and avoid obvious signs of captivity. Again the IS comes to the rescue in low light levels.

Same as Stuart said - depends on where I might be going.

Generally speaking though ..... my Tamron 28-300mm covers most eventualities and my 18-55mm is small enough to go in a large pocket or bag, even in its small lens pouch. So I'm always covered from 18mm up to 300mm wherever we go.

            Re: a quick question

            what pol & stuart said.
if i have no idea where i'm going then i'll put one of the 70-200 L's on the body (probs the F4 as it's lighter) and find somewhere to pack the 18-55 plastic thingy. if i really really couldn't take the kit lens, then i'd either stick with the 70-200 (i generally find i can forego wide angle if on a general, non countryside walkabout) or drop down to the 28-200, the choice being made on what i think i'd be shooting. if out in the sticks, then i'd probs go with the 17-40 and rue not having the 70-200 with me.
whatever your choice is though, you need to stick to selecting images to match the equipment rather than wish you had something else and not get any shots at all. this is especially so with underwater housed SLR's as changing a lens in the oggin isn't an option!

prior to having the nice glass, then it was only ever the 28-200 that was on the camera.

              Re: a quick question

Like most of the others have said it depends on what you are after. Having said that I always take my kit bag out with me in the back of the car never just the camera on its own. So in the bag is the 70-200g a 105 macro lens and my 24-70mm. So that just about covers it. The bad thing is with all that kit in one bag if someone walked off with it they would have one great bag of kit all they would need is a charger and that would be easy to pick up on the net.

                Re: a quick question

I generally decide on the lens before I go out, then arrive somewhere in a dust storm and realise I have the wrong lens fitted!
