  • An old chestnut

A new DSLR, an old chestnut.

What drives us to buy, huh?

I can understand wanting to go from 6 mp 1.6 crop, to 12.7 full frame, (I have to say that. It's in the contract), but 20d to 30d, 350d to 400d?

Isnt this just a big, smelly, gasseous pile of excrement? No?

    Why not?

yeah ...... and I have one too but only on a day when I'm a Polly.

I'm not a compulsive upgrader though I do enjoy having something new to play with. I don't need more than 6 mega-pixels as I'm just a hobbyist, rarely print anything larger than A4 and I certainly don't need the latest gizmos. I'm also a tad tight-fisted so I feel a need to justify a purchase to some degree ...... and I could never justify 'breaking the Bank' just to 'keep up with the Jones'.

I still have the *istD and you know how long I've had it. There are rumours of a possible 10mp camera being released later this year and I'd certainly be interested - but I wouldn't rush out to buy it. I'd rather see some new high quality Pentax/Samsung/Schneider lenses in the pipeline first. I'm cheesed off having to rely on the likes of Sigma and Tamron. I'm not so bothered about 10 mp ..... but I'd like anti-shake and a better buffer - maybe 5fps up to about 10-15 jpgs at the very least.

TBH - I've been giving some serious thought to changing systems as I feel uneasy and concerned my current gear will become obsolete - though David assures me that's unlikely to happen and he's urging me to "hold on" and not to lose my nerve.

I love the *istD but am less than impressed with the range of available new lenses. I'd like to see a fast 300mm or even 400mm prime available. Even if I deided I couldn't afford it I'd like to have the choice.

Anyway - I'm waffling because I'm thinking all the time about whether or not to stay with Pentax or 'take a leap' at some point in the next few months. In the meantime I'm hanging onto may savings and continuing to add to the a/c.

Hey young Pol, why not e-mail Jan for her perspective. I think she has a very specific opinion...... Probably.

Ps, why is my rep-power only one? Are you the only person who reads my posts, Pol?

Firstly - your rep power is decided according to how long you've been a member, how many posts you've made and how many rep points you have. Everyone starts off with 10 points - but the other factors are set by the board admin so I dunno all the details. For example over at tiscali - you get an extra rep power point for every year you've been a member, another rep power point for evey 1000 postings and another one for every 500 rep points you've got. over there - i have a rep power of 10 because I've been a member for 5 years, posted 4000+ postings and I have more than 500 rep points .. so my rep power adds up as 5+4+1 = 10. It's all a bit daft but there y'go.

I probably will email Jan before I take the plunge, if indeed I do take the plunge. I know how she agonised over it before she sold all her gear and changed over.

I really really want to stay with Pentax if at all possible and I often think of Jan and how she agonised over it. Pentax deserves a kick up the bottom imho and they're likely to lose more loyal customers unless they pull out their finger very soon!

I dunno if anyone else reads your posts? Maybe I'm the only person who can understand the JRT doggie woofs?

Rest assured there are others, probably like myself, that read all the post here but don't feel we have anything worth contributing to the thread. Carry on the good work. and thanks.

I'm sure you have a huge amount to offer ....... especially now that I'm pretty sure I've sussed who's hiding behind that Lumix.

You're such a nosey little mutt, ain't ya.

All I can tell you is it ain't that hairy gorilla fingered 'babe shooter'. Nor is it Johnny Sokko, or was it Rokko (the awful green robot).

Not a Canadian or a 'niiiiiiiiiiiiice' PJ running amok in a hairdressing salon either.

He's a dog lover so you're quite safe.

First I'm not hiding. Just thought the camera I use deserves more publicity. Second I'm only a little boy and little boys should be seen and not heard, so I'm told.

But I enjoy the noises you make, including the ones you make with that camera.

It's really nice to have you over here too.

Rufus my sincere apologies for this hijack, so in reply to your thread, I believe in roasting the old chestnut till it's of no further use. And Pol do you really know who I am? If so, out with it girl.

I think you're 'Shoppy' (aka Ron).
