  • Oly E-400

I just read that Oly has applied for a trade mark for "E-400" on August 25th. They also had a "now removed" oops on their European site and didn't quite clean up all the text, leaving at least one E-400.
A rumor has it that the Oly DSLR press meeting is Sept.14th. Out of all the wild guessing going on, the only tid bit that seemed valid was a comment that it would not have live view, as the person was first told (someone who would be told).

And why do you think that might be Bob? Would this perhaps be an Oly flagship model which they don't consider is suitable for live preview. or has it just not been a popular addition

Oly has also filed for E-3 as a trademark and they updated it recently. The E-3 is supposed to be the flagship model. I suspect one poster on another forum, who might know something, had it right with "small, cheap & simple". Oly has talked about making a small "soccer mom" model.
Making bodies smaller is possible, if they get rid of the on-board flash and the big capacitor to run it, thinning the body and making the lens mount proud would also work.
The comments that I get from my wife and a friend that was a professsional photographer when she lived in NY are that DSLRs ar too heavy and fat.
When the body is smaller than the kit lens, we have arrived...LOL

They should maybe check out the Canon 400D. Apparently one needs a magnifier to see it and a secure wrist-strap just to prevent it from floating away...

The funny thing is that both these ladies have used a Nikon F2, in their wild youthful days, of course Now, I think they want a purse size DSLR
The smaller and lighter the DSLRs get, the more image stabilization comes into its own on those breezy days.

Apparently those of you in the UK who subscribe to Photography Monthly will get to see the E-400 in the issue just delivered. I am sure that Ian's pictures will be of higher quality than the copy posted on various forums. It is a real cutey.

Well the article is up and there are some 40 pictures to peruse if you are interested

Texas-Bob is a bit put-out that the E-400 hasn't been launched in the USA. When I heard that the announcement was going to be Europe-only, I was certainly flummoxed. No official explanation has been made, either.

I'm sure Olympus people will be pestered by the press concerning this at Photokina in a couple of weeks.

                Re: Oly E-400

                Hi Ian,
After thinking on this for a while, I think the best reason for Oly to do this is protection of the dealers here that have large stocks of E-500 & E-300, which would not move out the door as fast with this cutey around to distract customers. I think Sony did something like this on a few models in the US.
