  • E5 Test using the Sigma 50-500

A really good day today so I sneaked out for an hour to test the performance with the Sigma 50-500 on the new E5.

Focussing times were swifter and the IQ has improved with the new camera. I had already compared RAW output with jpg output from the camera and was satisfied thet the benefits of the new image processor worked well on both types of output file.

I used ISO 800 to see how things would turn out.

Knowing Pol likes Gulls, I thought I would take a few shots of them

    Juvenile Black-headed Gull.

I have a few blown highlights, my problem in getting used to the settings but, other than that, I think they turned out well at the higher ISO.
    Kind regards

Hi Peter - it's good to hear that you are getting on well with your new camera

I was about to say I wish I had more time to get out there and take some pictures, but that would be avoiding the issue - I NEED to make some time and get out there, and you're certainly an inspiration.

Some very good images Peter. I'm sure as time goes on we will get a lift from what we take.

Just off to a funeral, I hope this heavy rain goes away to make the day more pleasant for the family involved.

Thank you Ian. The lack of RAW converter is a draw-back and causing lots of extra work trying to figure out how I can load Lightroom. Lightroom does not seem to see the two files RAW and jpg from the camera. I had to use iB to take the files from the camera. Then copy then paste the jpg images into a folder in the Lightroom import path then finally synchronise the folder. Of course it still does not allow me to PP the RAW file but I shall leave that joy till later.
I have seen some wildlife images on a US forum that have been taken using Auto ISO with an upper limit of 3200. They came out well even at the highest setting. It certainly appears that Olympus have removed the shackles surrounding versatillity.
The next test shall be with the Sigma 150 Macro. I look forward to getting out and trying this sometime today.
        Kind regards

Aaaaah it's Gilbert with his family all having a nice day out at the seaside. The last one looks amusing as it comes across as though the adult has fallen into the 'drink' ... though I'm sure he didn't really.

I always hankered after a Sigma 50-500 (the Bigma) but I know I wouldn't be able to manage the weight. I have one of the older Sigma 150-500 lenses but I rarely use that now either - too heavy, too prone to zoom drop and the focus ring is also quite loose and slack now.

Excellent lenses though. There are loads of top-notch shots to be seen from them. Enjoy yours, along with your new E5.

Greetings to Gilbert and tell him to fly safely in this stormy weather.

Can Lightroom handle DNG files? I know nothing about Lightroom (I use CS4) nor do I know anything about Oly Raw files but I wondered if maybe you could convert them to DNG then open them in LR in the usual way.

Maybe Ian could advise help on this? Is the latest Adobe DNG converter able to convert the Oly Raw files?

DNG is an Adobe invention so of course Lightroom can work with DNG files

However, the E-5 is too new to be supported by Adobe Camera RAW for Photoshop, LIghtroom, or the DNG converter. Even the new latest update release candidate or beta doesn't support the E-5.

Olympus' own software, Viewer 2, was updated to support the E-5 at the end of last month, however. Viewer 2 is not as slick as Lightroom, but it's not a bad piece of software by any means and I would recommend trying that until LR supports the E-5. Unfortunately, Viewer 2 doesn't have an option to export as DNG, only JPEG and TIFF.

Thanks Pol I thought these would amuse you. The juvenile is from this year, probably only 3months old and already an expert flier. The splash-down was as you thought, a heavy landing!
