Teeny super-wide Micro Four Thirds zoom

I know there are some Panasonic and Olympus Micro Four Thirds fans here on DPNow, so this is for you:



On the left is the Four Thirds DSLR version of the Olympus Zuiko Digital 9-18mm f/4-5.6 (18-36 full frame equivalent), while in the middle is the Micro Four Thirds Olympus m.Zuiko 9-18mm f/4-5.6. That's an Olympus Pen E-PL1, the new and cheaper MFT model from Olympus.

4/3rdsm is catching on, I read some research notes this week which said:
Cameras like the Panasonic GF1 and Olympus E-P1 are starting to make a dent in Digital SLR sales according to new figures from market research company GfK.

GfK Retail and Technology is claiming around 10% of cameras with an interchangeable lens sold in the UK in December were sporting the Micro Four Thirds badge.

The news shows that there is a massive demand for a smaller, more compact camera even though the Micro Four Thirds models available at the time were selling for a premium comparable to an entry-level DSLR camera.


I wonder how long before Canon/Nikon launch theirs?

This looks like a very pratical lens with a useful range. I had a 7-14mm Panasonic (I think Ian tried it on an EP1 at Stamford) but found it too specialised and sold it on. This lens may be well worth considering.

All the MFT brigade need now is a good long decent aperture tele.

A large aperture telephoto would be big - possibly too big for compact bodies. Panasonic already has a 14-140 (28-280) and Olympus is bringing out a 14-150 (28-300) in June. But these are 3.5-5.6 optics, so not fast.
