  • What are Nikon bringing to the table next week?

I have read rumours of upgraded DSLR from Nikon as well as a compact with a DSLR size sensor.

    Any further news, anyone?

Nikon's DSLR range is pretty new and comprehensive. Where is the gap to fill?

But a compact with a relatively large sensor, I think that makes sense. Sounds a bit like the new Leica X1.

What does everyone here want Nikon to announce?

Didn't I read that Nikon are involved in the manufacture of the Leica? It would be nice to have a compact with a decent sized sensor.

It has a Sony sensor, but I thought the bulk was Leica in-house.

          Hi Ian,
Well, we have the large sensor compacts from Sigma, Oly, Pany and Leica, so I'd guess an entry from Nikon would be in order. If it is a fixed lens, a zoom would make it different from Sigma's DPs and Leica's X1. Nikon does have some older compact styles to play with. I'm thinking about those that had the 2/3" sensors and maybe those twisty ones. If they go retro like Leica's X1, they could style off of the Nikon SP rangefinder. If it has a prime lens then maybe a built in optical finder would set it apart, something like the CP5000 with user friendly controls (ala DSLRs). Coolpix may give way to Bigpix

So all the compact rumours came to nought - instead we had a D3 upgrade and a new DX 85mm macro lens, see:

102400 ISO, though - quite amazing!

Holy screaming ISOs, Batman! The nice thing about this is that in light that requires ISO 102,400, that big hulking machine will not be as intimitating
Do you think that the new sensor is a take off of Sony's ExMore technology? This development does bode well for that mythical compact that we were hoping for. This senor scaled down to APS-C plus Epson's new LCD panel viewfinder, in a compact body and Nikon can laugh all the way to the bank....for a while anyway.....
                  Fun times,

                    Hi Ian,
Here is an interesting rumor based on patent filings.

Re: What are Nikon bringing to the table next week?

Hi Bob - that's very interesting. If we assume that Nikon has gone for a 17mm diagonal frame, I have done some arithmetic and have come up with:

Nikon 'mini' sensor area comparison (4:3 aspect ratio) percentages are compared to:

                      Full frame: 15%
                      APS-C: 56%
                      Four Thirds: 62%
                      1 2/3rds inch: 239%

Focal length equivalence or 'crop' factors:

                      Full frame: 1x
                      APS-C: 1.5x
                      Four Thirds: 2x
                      Nikon 'mini': 2.5x
                      1 2/3rds inch: 3.9x

As we know, Canon and Nikon fans are very critical of the small Four Thirds sensor size. But the Nikon mini is substantially smaller again, with just two thirds the area of a Four Thirds frame of the same aspect ratio.

This would enable Nikon to make a slightly smaller camera than a Micro Four Thirds camera, but would it be substantially smaller? I'm not sure.

I'm tempted to speculate that Nikon would want to firmly differentiate this mini format form their APS-C DSLRs.

                      Interesting!

Apparently Richoh can be added to the mirrorless parade. Rumored dates are around 10-12 Nov. The fractured rumors include stuff like folded light path, K-Mount and collaberation between Ricoh, Pentax & Samsung.
