Stephen has a G9, but I personally feel the new Panasonic Lumix LX3 is better, although it won't be available for a few weeks. The LX3 is more compact, and has a much wider view at the short end of the zoom, though it's not as long at the other end.

If an equivalent focal length range of 24-60 (and f/2) is OK, then I'd seriously consider the LX3. If you need more telephoto in the zoom range, then the G9 will be better.

Yes, I have the G9 and can recommend it. I can't argue with Ians comment though and I would agree that a wider angle lens would be useful. However the 6x zoom is useful. I find the size of the G9 to be ideal for me, it fits my hand nicely and I tend to use it with a wrist strap. The control and ease of use it offers is very good. If you can afford to wait though untill the Panasonic is in the shops, you maybe able to compare. The fact is though that the Canon is a tried and tested model which always comes out well in reviews, if you can put up with a field of view equivalent to 35mm the camera is the market leader at present.

You can also read some of my comments and thoughts on the camera HERE and HERE

Thanks Jan to make me awere of this camera i will look more closely at this when it comes to trade, i have 2 older Panasonic cameras ( 7 years ) and have been pleased with them. The LX 3 look very expressive have 10,0 mil pixel ,RAW,2,0 summicron optic and you can get an optical external viewfinder (hate cameras without viewfinder) so i wait a little to buy.Peder.

Stephen and I have already discussed these two cameras My main disappointment with the G9 is that it doesn't have a good wide-angle coverage. I also question the need for 12 megapixels in a small camera.

The LX3 is not perfect, though - the external viewfinder is an expensive option and I know many will find its 60mm (equivalent) tele end quite a limitation.

I bought a G9 in Jan 2008 and sold it 3 months later. I was a fine camera in most respects but I did not like it's tendency to "far focus" - it always wanted to focus on the background instead of the subject. I also never found the secret to getting consistently sharp pictures from it no matter what aperture/shutter speed combo I was using. Using external flash helped a lot, but I didn't want to take that many photos with flash. Besides, hauling around an external flash kinda defeats the purpose of having a tiny camera!

I found the G9 to be just too small. I'm accustomed to using film and digital SLR cameras... the G9 felt more like a toy to me (but it certainly wasn't built like a toy - it was a solid, well made product).

With due respect rae2, I know nothing of your ability or background, what you say regarding focusing with the G9 seems to me to be more a case of user error. The camera has several focusing modes as well as 9 focusing points, anyone of which can be selected. However, you could have it so it focuses on the nearest point, or, as I do usually, have it on the centre point. Now if you have the centre point on a position in the background, then this is where it will focus. As the photographer, its down to you to take control of the camera and make it focus where you want.

As for its size, I would recommend anyone to be aware of a cameras size before purchasing. Many compact users today would prefer a smaller and less 'chunky' camera than the G9 I feel

I've recently bought a G9 and have to declare I really love its size, its weight, its convenience and stealthy nature - as well as the image quality and vast range of creative facilities - from RAW to IS.

My only regret is that I didn't buy one of these gems much earlier

                        Re: CANON G 9.Help advise.

I certainly will Ian - I intend keeping DP for the Canon images and E Group for the Olympus dslr shots.

Much as I love my E-1 (as you know) I am finding the sheer convenience of the G9 quite liberating and I basically find I take it with me most everywhere - just like my old Oly rangefinder.

Photo opportunities should hopefully therefore increase

General feeling I've picked up seems to be that while the G10 may be a lovely camera -the price differential over the G9 is difficult to justify. Personally I can only comment on the G9.
I'm sure loyal G10'ers will dive in to defend their purchases

The price differential in Denmark are only 15 pound . (picmania)
                              3550,00 danic kroner.= 431,78 GBP.
