  • Canon A460 (or similar) for Child's First Camera?

My soon-to-be-8-year old daughter wants a digicam for her birthday, and I thought the Canon PowerShot A460 might be a good entry-level unit.

Actually, except for the lack of a hot-shoe and no RAW mode, this camera is probably much better than the old Canon G1 I started on!

It's fairly inexpensive yet gets decent reviews. Just wondering if anyone here has experience with this model, or something similar.

Hi Slej, you have obviously read reviews on it so no point mentioning the Pros & Cons. Essentially if you don't want to spend a load of dosh, and it seems daft to do so on an eight year old, then this seems pretty good. In the UK it can be bought for a little over eighty pounds.

I have two daughters close to this age and my main concern is the well-being of the camera!

I'd recommend you start with a camera that doesn't have a vulnerable motorised lens assembly that emerges from the camera body. Something lke the Samsung Digimax A503 - just as an example.

Having just replaced a Canon Ixus (insurance job) for a 19 yr old cos the lens got damaged, I should go along with that principle but we ended up getting the very sexy ixus 750

Interesting point about the motorized lens. Hadn't considered that before; might be especially relevant for us as we've also got a 5-year old and a 20-month old ...

          Thanks!
