ahhh wow. That means now I can take shots of the rainbow lorikeets in our plum tree when & if they visit...maybe a cockatoo or three! I just am perplexed at presemt on how to get it to work properly!(the zoom) The quality of first shots taken the 1st time out aren't ny better than my Nikon It seems that to make it work I would have to reduce megapixel to 5m instead of 8, then it increases optical zoom to 15.3 or 12x is that correct? Love the colour of your skies. Do you use Adobe sRGB or RGB. Does it (colourspace) make any difference when shooting in RAW?

Thanks Patrick. Yes I do use Photoshop CS2 & sometimes Paintshop 9. I do tweak my pics a bit with the usual levels, saturation etc. I was just reading an article this evening & it said there is a special workflow to adjustments on PS, but it didn't comment on which, do you know what workflow should be at all...levels, saturation, curves..... cropping at the end! I have just experimented with last couple of photos done in adjusting white & black points to see if it would give my prints more punch (after reading another article on HDR Imaging which sounds great but too complicated to do!) I will try the RAW shooting instead, thanks

I'm preparing an e-mail for you with some tips for the FZ30 along with one to match DSLR smooth quality, if you are interesting to do so.
Here are two sample images at wide angle (35mm) and full telephoto (420mm). The camera records amazing amaunt of detail even at full telephoto (that is much more visible at the full photo size). Both shots supplied are handheld.

In bright sunlight or backlit use the parasoleil (lens hood supplied). That will minimize lens flare and ghosting. The parasoleil cuts out excess light and improves picture quality.

        @ 35mm

        @ 420mm

Thaks George...yes I have been using the parasoleil! I'm looking forward to your e-mail! It is absolutely amazing the clarity you manage to get in your pics! If mine could come out half as clear as yours do, I'd be happy! However, I have just printed a pic of an Autumn leaf shot with my Nikon the other day before buying FZ & I'm thrilled with it! I returned to the scene to use new camera & quality was no better, if not many more blurred! Oh well, it was only the 1st time out & I realize I have one heck of a lot to learn as well as much experimenting to do before proficiency can be expected! I have posted the pics of Autumn leaves on forum. Love your 2 pics above! Somehow, the 1st reminds me very slightly of a Cape Town (South Africa) suburb... I think its Bantry Bay....very similiar in atmosphere somehow! Obviously these are Greek & very beautiful!

          Ooohhh Jocelyn,

          Do not be dissapointed.
I had from time to time almost most non DSLR Nikons and believe me that the The FZ30 beats all of them! You just need to learn to operate your new camera and the results will be stunning. For the truth of what I'm saying I will do an experiment for you, Nikon vs Panasonic to see what kind of detail the LEICA lens pulls out on the photos and post the results.

In the mid time send me at my e-mail an outdoor full size FZ30 photo including part of the sky to make sure that your camera doesn't have any problem since there is one more left in the store to exchange it if there is a problem with the one you've got.

I will do that. I have a day off work this Thur, so hopefully the weather will improve & I can take some pics. Should I set it to 5M to be able to increase the optical zoom if taking scenery shots....do I then turn it to 420 as well...does this work like the infinity setting on old 35mm Canon film cameras? What settings should I use on close ups & macro....35 & 5 Megapixels with shutter priority? Its almost like learning for pilots licence..lol!

Jocelyn, I'm going to leave you in the very capable hands of George. He has the exact same model as you, where as I have the FZ20. I don't want to confuse you with how I set my camera as there may be differences to yours. Do post some pics soon.

Thanks Ron. Yes George has very kindly given advice etc which is very much appreciated. It does help to hear other peoples opinions on things to take an eclectic view of things!

                      Ron,

The FZ30 is indeed an updated version of the FZ20. Though speaking strictly of picture quality they don't differ that much as hues, settings and processing at all ISOs look very similar.
So any advice from the capable hands of FZ20 owners is also welcomed and can contribute towards experimenting for the better

                      George
