  • Please stop me now..........

.................. if you think I'm being stupid and impulsive.

I'm on the verge of ordering a Panasonic Lumix DMC FX01 in black. Mainly its intended for my wife, (and me of course) so she can carry it easily in her bag, and use it in a point & shoot sorta way. It seems to get a good report from what I've read and OMG it looks sexy So whaddaya think?

Careful Stephen, your wife may prove to be a better photographer than you. If it's any thing like my Lumix in performance, then I'd say go for it.

      Looks a nice tidy camera.
Are you sure she wouldn't prefer a Ricoh GR-D though?

Mrs Dave is in the marker for a digital compact. Can't seem to convince her to get a Ricoh GR-D either!

Mmm..... in a somewhat different class and price band doncha fink. I suspect you may be a Ricoh lover. Somehow its never been a brand I have looked at, but thats maybe my loss.

          Re: Please stop me now..........

The FX01 is very popular with members of my family - I think at least three of them have one and another hs the FX9, which is its predecessor.

Good points: sharp pictures, good low light sensitivity, good movie mode and 28mm equivalent wide angle view at the wide end. It's also very small and, as you say, looks really nice.

Bad points: auto only (but lots of scene modes), the lens at 28mm does show a lot of corner shading and the auto exposure system tends to keep the aperture wide open. If the lens was allowed to stop down, it would reduce the corner shading. The thumb-wheel selection of playback and shooting modes is a bit of a double-edged sword as if you are in playback mode, you can't just tap the shutter button to get back into shooting mode.

The cons are, I feel, far outweighed by the pros, though. I'd get one if I were you, Stephen, though the Fujifilm FinePix should be considered seriously as well.

Ricoh are a funny old brand. I get the idea there a couple of camera nuts sat in the corner amongst all the photocopier salesmen, who every now and again manage to push a classic camera out of the door.

Actually, I'm not lusting after a GR-D, although I think the GR1 film version is probably the most remarkable camera I've ever owned.

The Caplio GX I tried a couple of years ago was pretty awful, though it had the right intentions in having wider than average lens.

Hehe, IMHO the F30 takes slightly better pictures, especially in low light, but the FX01 is more cute and has the wide angle lens.

I suspect there is always a bit of a value judgement when it comes to 'better pictures' The Cameras.co.uk site I used as a quick guide gave the Fuji 81% and the Panny 86% But for image quality it was 8/10 and 9/10 respectfully.

Seriously, don't try hammering any nails in with that Panasonic.......it isn't the all-purpose tool that your 1D Mk II is...
