I guess 16:9 is more "popular" because of standards in manufacturing, so it keeps the costs down, but that hardly considers the requirements of the end user.
What initially steered me away from the 16:9s is that a 23" 16:9 (1920x1080) monitor is actually smaller in height than my previous 19" 4:3 monitor, so a 24" of the same would only be slightly larger, and 22" would have been noticeably smaller. It seems ridiculous that a 21"-23" monitor is smaller in height than a 19" monitor.
Ian's reviewing a 27" model, so I don't know how that would compare (obviously it'll be physically bigger in both directions even if it's limited to 1920x1080px), but I don't see myself looking at 16:9 models in the future.

Re: 27 inch AOC i2757Fm in for review
I use a 24 inch 1920x1200 monitor at the office, which replaced a 22 inch 1600x1200 CRT. I think everything is relative. My laptop screen is 1366x768 (also 16:9) so it has more horizontal pixels than my old laptop (1280x800) but a few less vertical ones. I value the extra width but don't really miss the slight loss in vertical pixels.
The 27 inch AOC is substantially larger than the 24 inch one I have but does lose 120 pixels in height. I haven't positioned the two side by side yet. Will let you know
