Hopefully we will get to see the "Impressed" young lady with her tech-select card.

My wife trusts me completely with the purchase of any greeting card

Good idea Ian. I wonder what the shop owner's reaction would have been had they known what you were doing. I ask this because a few years ago I was browsing some statuettes of the type my wife collects. I was struggling to recall which she already had and they are way to expensive to risk buying a duplicate. I approached the shop owner and explained the situation and told her that my wife was unable to visit herself. I asked permission to take photographs so she could make her choice at home. I was taken aback by her curt refusal, she seemed to assume that I was on some sort of sabotage mission . Needless to say I left the shop and have never been back since.

Actually, I was in the supermarket

I remember once when I was at the famous Akihabira district in Tokyo where all the camera shops and electronics stores are, someone told me I was in danger of being told off for taking pictures in the shops!

            Re: Empowered by imaging

I had a not dissimilar experience yesterday when out shopping for a friend. However, I had to resort to texting because there was almost no signal in our Morrisons (in fact, the reply text she sent to one question didn't get to me until I'd returned home!).

There would have been no chance of using a video option to help with the shopping, simply due to lack of a decent 3G signal.

Fortunately, my phone happens to be dual-SIM so I could switch over from the poor signal '3' network to my PAYG GiffGaff SIM at the touch of a button and was able to do the texting. This would not have been an option with any of my previous phones, given the way UK networks are in the Dark Ages compared to other countries when it comes to dual-SIM phones.

I mention this because, while your use of video was ingenious to share the shopping experience, my experience is that this country still has a long way to go before such things become ubiquitous.

I find that while mobile data signal is certainly far from perfect, it is getting better, but there is also a great deal of free wifi available. The big Asda store in Watford, where I shop, now has free wifi in-store. Many department stores and restaurants now provide free wifi. As a T-Mobile customer I get access to BT's Openzone public wifi service for no extrta cost and if you are a BT broadband customer you get that and the BT Fon service (over a million access points around the country). There is free wifi at quite a few London Underground stations now thanks to Virgin too. So it's looking up. I was in our local Sainsburys when choosing the card and I used mobile data on that occasion.

                Re: Empowered by imaging

I haven't used "free WiFi" myself, mainly because I don't know where it's available but also because I have free unlimited data on my '3' phone so I don't go seeking WiFi points. I wouldn't even know where to look to know if there's WiFi available anywhere for free. It's only when the '3' signal lets us down that I put any thought into it at all.

Is public WiFi secure? I ask because, when setting up WiFi at home we're always making sure the encryption is on the highest setting with a particularly long passcode. How does that work when using "free" WiFi? I wouldn't want any stranger on the same free WiFi network having the ability to get into my devices.

I'm sure there are things in place to prevent that but I rarely read anything about security on free WiFi - I just catch people saying "there's free WiFi at <enter name of establishment that wants you to buy something here>".
