camera gear in the backback, make sure it isn't too bulked out and pretend it's really light when you carry it around. for dive trips my hand luggage normally contains: 1 or 2 underwater cameras, underwater strobe, battery chargers, memory cards, power leads, image tank, dive computer, logbooks, goggles, some spare clothes, mp3 player, dive regs and other stuff that i really don't want broken. it weighs, ahem, 5kg. not been stopped yet, although if you do get stopped it's normally too late to put stuff in the hold bag anyway.
half the battle is making it not look like it's been bulked out.
Hi Stephen
Ive been too and frowing from Germany with my 17" laptop in hugh bag with more weight than a local business man and had no problems - spread the weight with your better half.
I'm heading off to the USA in August and thinking of similar problems and thankfully my wife and I have a hugh weight allowance.
Good luck Dave R
Hi Stephen,
If you're willing to hang the 1D and your biggest lens around your neck (alla moi) whilst you go through check-in and security that will save some weight and volume in the hand luggage department. I mean, you've got at least 8hrs to relax and get your vertebrae realigned!
