we all know that the "rule of thirds" also known as the "golden mean" states that there are four points of interest. these points are where the screen or image is divided into thirds both vertically and horizontally. okay so far what's the point? okay let take a day at the beach. on the water is a sail boat. first and foremost before we begin... whenever water is involved in an image especially as a horizon line KEEP IT LEVEL. next never place it in the center, it will divide the image into a top half and a bottom half. also off the subject but light reflects off the sky onto the water making it appear blue. here's where a polarizing filter would render the correct shade of green. now back to the sail boat. always place more room in front of the subject than behind. the viewer will look in the direction our subject is facing rather than behind. if the boat is facing the left then the boat would be placed best on the right point. okay now there are two right points, lower third and upper third. now we are finally at the reason for this narrative. if you chose to place the boat on the lower third, then the majority of the image is sky. unless there are nasty clouds looming above the boat, it will look like a fair day for a pleasure cruise. if you place the boat on the upper third, then there will be more water than sky. this implies a different relationship between the boat and the lake. now it looks more like a challenge to be out sailing. my point, simple composition change the impression of the subject, even using a cell phone camera.
