First the camera settings:
The camera must be set to manual and my camera attached to the flash/ light unit by a cable. We were told to set to ISO 100, f8 and 125 shutter speed. The White Balance could be set to either flash or cloudy day.
We went through the flash light switches, knobs and attachments.
The model was sat at least a metre from the back-drop.
We, then, took four photographs all with the same settings on the camera and the flash light in sync. The differences were with the attachments on the flash.
Picture One - light at same height as model without defuser (apologies for not in-focus).

Picture Two.
Now the light is high up pointing downwards. There was a small defuser around the bulb.

Picture Three.
The same settings as the second picture but with a large reflector held on the model's right.

Picture Four.
This time a small softbox was put over the bulb.

The differences were discussed as the photos were being taken. Without any defuser the lighting is harsh with big shadows. If the light is high up pointing down the shadows are more flattering. The reflector lights the RHS of the model's face. The softbox makes the light softer. The bigger the softbox the softer the light.
So which picture is the best? Well, what do you think?
Thanks for your comments. I was getting a little despondent. I think the orangey hue on the third picture is from the reflector. The black background is a black wall. The college has a large room with one wall totally painted black. I think next week we will be using different coloured drops.
I tend to miss the blogs. I hadn't realised that they don't appear in "Realtime" or "New Posts".
After I replied to yours last night I looked for my reply but couldn't find it, so I was surprised that you found it.
Does it appear in your e mail when someone replies?
I hope that helps.
