What will Nokia have to show today?

It was barely two months ago that Nokia held a big international press launch in London to unveil the Lumia 925 Windows 8 Smartphone. Today Nokia is poised to hold what's been described as an even bigger event in New York and I'm here in the Big Apple representing DPNow.com. While the Lumia 925 had some pretty special photography features for a smartphone, especially in the area of low-light photography without flash, today's announcement has been labelled 'reinventing zoom'.

A re-engineered 41 megapixel Nokia 808 PureView?

Nokia has invested in an exciting new technology company, Pelican Imaging, that is working on an array camera (multiple tiny lenses) for compact and slim devices like smartphones and tablets, but the hints are that this area is for a future spotlight. Instead what we're expecting is a repackaging of the Nokia 808 PureView camera from last year.

The 808 PureView uses a remarkable 41 megapixel sensor and highly optimised pixel processing to provide a relatively high quality digital zoom function. It also uses Carl-Zeiss optics.

While the camera was great for a smartphone - easily the best smartphone camera, even today, the 808 Pureview was hampered by a less than sexy design which was rather thick and heavy and it relied on the old Symbian operating system.

We think that Nokia will today unveil an evolved successor to the 808 PureView in a new slimmer design, running Windows Phone 8 and with added creativity features for photographers.
