It looks like camera companies find it hard to let go of the past. Nikon uses a 50 year old lens mount, Fujifilm revived its X-mount moniker for the new X-Pro1 system camera while the camera itself is full of retro cues, Pentax has returned to the 'K' designation in its DSLRs, while Olympus revived its 1960s Pen brand for its Micro Four Thirds compact system cameras.

And it looks like Olympus is dipping into its history once again, with teaser ads for a forthcoming launch that is being linked with Olympus' old 'OM' film SLR system that was launched in the 1970s.

Is this marketing genius or a serious lack of imagination? Can we look forward to the revival of the Canon half frame 'Dial' brand? Will Pentax bring back the Spotmatic brand? Leica - well Leica is retro with a capital R anyway.

Olympus not only used their old Pen brand, they even styled their cameras after the look of the old Pen SLRs. But does such a strategy work with a younger audience? I'm 50 and even for me the old Pens from the 1960s were well before my time.

Does retro camera branding appeal to you?
