I don't think my poor old laptop knows where it's going next. It has had Windows 7 reinstalled (from Visto to Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit to Professional 64 bit) and its 5400rpm 250GB drive replaced by a 7200rp 500GB drive, only for a few weeks later for that drive to be repalced by a 120GB SanDisk Ultra SSD drive, which I subsequently reviewed.
As the new 500Gb drive has been made homeless, and the 120GB SSD is a bit on the small side, I have invested in an external USB-connected case for the 500GB drive. I went for an Icy Box USB 3.0 enclosure and a cheap no-name USB 3.0 interface card (ExpressCard 34) for the laptop.
I have to say I'm delighted with both. I get transfer rates of over 100MB/sec over USB 3.0 compared to 30MB/sec if I'm lucky over ordinary USB 2.0. I'm hoping a USB 3.0 interface card (PCI Express) will arrive today for my PC tower here at the office.
And of course the 500GB USB 3.0 drive is fully backwards compatible with USB 2.0.
I can see a USB 3.0 pen drive going on the Christmas list! :)

#2Ian commented09-12-11, 09:45 AMEditing a commentOne thing to bear in mind is that some USB 3.0 devices will have a new USB 3.0 port so old USB cables may not fit. On the other end the connector is the same as before for backwards compatibility. USB 3.0 cables and ports can be identified as they are blue :)
