Full marks to Lara for being a very patient model this evening. This time I used two off-camera flashes (Olympus FL-50Rs) controlled by the camera wirelessly (Olympus E-5), one behind Lara and one to her left (right as viewed) again fitted with the Lastolite EZYBOX mini soft box. Our back room has yellow walls and unfortunately there was a nasty yellow tint to Lara's skin from reflections off the wall, so I had to convert to mono. Balancing the two flashes required a few test exposures and adjusting the power of each. And this is the result. Lens used: Olympus Zuiko Digital 70-300mm f/4-5.6, @70mm f/4

  Thanks Audrey! Stephen, I think we're visualising different goals; I wanted a dark side and deliberately lit the scene accordingly, with one flash to the right. The picture was taken with most of the room lights off and a fast sync speed to eliminate as much of the ambient light as possible in order to achieve the effect. This was about the twelfth take :). I also deliberately shot a full aperture and minimum ISO in order to limit the depth of field.

  When I saw the photo last night I was using my iPad. This morning on the desktop machine there seems to be much more detail in the shadow area to the left.
  
  I still feel there is not quite enough DOF. and f8 may have been better.
  
  I regularly use a couple of Elinchron D-Lites to photograph people. Now granted I'm trying to achieve something different, and the flashlights are more powerful, but at f8-11 at 125 iso 100 the exposure is completely black without the flash. What I'm saying is that I don't think you need to worry about ambient light too much. At f8 and 1/60-1/125s you would still eliminate ambient light. I'd also suggest using the flash setting for WB

  Interesting comment about the iPad display. I know my laptop has a relatively poor display as it uses a resistive touch screen (in addition to Wacom pen-sensitivity) and it's very directional, so it can be hit and miss when processing an image visually. The iPad, on the other hand, has a capacitive screen which is bright and contrasty and not too badly affected by viewing angle, but the nature of an iPad is that the view is often resized because its display resolution is only 1024x768, and this means detail inevitably gets sacrificed. On the other hand we usually view things on laptops and desktops at 1:1 pixel resolution.
