The Video and Photography Show goes to London for 2025

After ten years, the big annual UK photography event, the Photography and Video Show, is moving from the Birmingham National Exhibition Centre to London Excel, starting on Saturday, 8th March and running until Tuesday, 11th. But don’t worry if you prefer the Midlands venue, the plan is to alternate between London and Birmingham in future years.

If you aren’t familiar with the Photography and Video Show, it’s not just a camera show where you can touch and try the latest gear, though over 250 brands are represented in one way or another. There are also seminars and talks, with more than 25 guest photographers and filmmakers lined up at the time of writing. There are also special creativity areas as a part of the Creator Con, including talks and presentations by leading content creators.

A flavour of the Photography and Video Show

The usual big brands, like Canon, Sony, Nikon, OM System, Adobe, Pentax, Tamron, Sigma, Fujifilm, Epson, and so on, will be there, along with many other large and small firms showing their accessories and services.

The show takes place just after the big CP+ trade show in Japan, so lots of new cameras, lenses and other exciting new products unveiled there will be shown in London during the event, for the first time.

Many of the publishers of photography magazines will be there, hopefully with some great subscription deals. We also hope the big gear retailers, including Camera World, LCE, and WEX, will be battling each other on great show-price deals.

If you are sure of going, it’s best to purchase your tickets online and book any seminars or talks in advance.

For more about the show, check out the official Photography and Video Show website.

DxOMark to present at Electronic Imaging Online 2021

DPNow comment: While we’re all surely missing going to shows like CES, The Photography Show and Photokina, some of these events are ploughing ahead socially-distanced, online. One such event is Electronic Imaging 2021 Online. Its credentials have been given a boost by confirmation from the renowned French company, DxOMark, that they will be involved in next month’s event:

DxOMark press release:

January 25th, online at Electronic Imaging 2021

DXOMARK, the French engineering services company well-known for its benchmark and recognized by camera, smartphone, and audio manufacturers world-wide, will showcase its expertise by presenting two papers assessing testing for image quality. On January 25 Frédéric Guichard, CEO & CTO at DXOMARK, along with his team of engineers, will explore the issues driving the industry by drawing upon the research completed at the DXOMARK Paris-based labs.

With over 10 years of experience testing and evaluating lenses and DSLRs and smartphone cameras. DXOMARK has developed unique, stringent scientific test protocols and industry-graded tools run by their engineers and technicians. Its Analyzer hardware and software suite for image-quality benchmarking has been used in image-quality testing for over a decade. 150 Analyzer laboratories are installed around the world. DXOMARK’s test reports are highly solicited by camera makers worldwide to help them measure image quality and to benchmark their products in various stages of the product development cycle.

Electronic Imaging 2021 conference attendees are invited to attend two DXOMARK webinars:

  • Evaluation of the Lens Flare

By Elodie Souksava, Thomas Corbier, Alexandra Giraud, François-Xavier Thomas, Laurent Chanas, and Frédéric Guichard

Flare, or stray light, is a visual phenomenon generally considered undesirable in photography and reduces image quality. In this talk, presenters will present an objective metric for quantifying the amount of flare of the lens of a camera module.

  • RAW Image Quality Evaluation Using Information Capacity

By François-Xavier Thomas, Thomas Corbier, Emilie Baudin, Yiqi Li, Laurent Chanas, and Frédéric Guichard.

This presentation outlines a comprehensive objective metric for estimating digital camera system performance using the DXOMARK’s RAW test protocol. These techniques and this work have the potential to improve digital image quality evaluation and to pave the way for advancements in domains such as automotive or surveillance cameras.

New exhibition of black and white photography reveals the optimism and ingenuity of a post-war world

In the years following the First World War, countries, cities, societies and individuals had to regenerate and rebuild themselves on an unprecedented scale – but from devastation and loss, a new world emerged.

Exploring the theme of renewal in relation to individual, societal and global recovery, Renewal: Life after the First World War in Photographs (21 September 2018 – 31 March 2019) highlights the ways in which lives, landscapes and national identities recovered, evolved and even flourished in the aftermath of war. Examining the complex processes of reconstruction, this major exhibition at IWM London includes over 130 black and white photographs, documents and objects from the museum’s extensive collection.

The exhibition charts the initial optimism that followed the end of the First World War, as well as the realities of displacement, demobilisation, social change and the fall of empires. Many individuals found themselves in new nations as borders were re-drawn and empires disbanded, but while the devastating effects of war were felt on both sides, developments in materials and new technologies also led to innovations. Military equipment was repurposed for civilian use and advances in medicine and plastic surgery enabled the reconstruction of the human body.

From images of refugees returning to ruined homes, through the reconstruction of Ypres, to battlefields depicting the villages that ‘died for France’ and were never rebuilt, these rarely seen photographs from this little-explored time period reveal the extent of destruction and change in war-torn Europe and beyond.

Alan Wakefield, Head of First World War and Early 20th Century Conflict at IWM, said: “Drawing primarily on IWM’s rich and varied photography archive, this new exhibition presents images from both official and personal collections, giving insight into the innovation, opportunism and resourcefulness that shaped the rebuilding and regeneration of the post-war world. Both surprising and inspiring, the exhibition highlights the resilience and ingenuity of the human spirit in a time of unprecedented social and political change.”

Renewal: Life after the First World War in Photographs is part of Making a New World, a season of innovative exhibitions, installations and immersive experiences taking place across IWM London and IWM North between 27 July 2018 and 31 March 2019. The free season will explore themes of remembrance and how the First World War has shaped the society we live in today.

The Photography Show starts today!

This year’s The Photography Show starts today at the rather cold and snowy Birmingham National Exhibition Centre (NEC).

I’m here at the show today to search out the show highlight, including interesting exhibits and show gear deals.

Here’s my first update from the show; a gallery of shots from WEX, Cameraworld and LCE, who are the main three camera retailers exhibiting this year:

Meanwhile, all the main camera marques are exhibiting. It has to be said the Nikon stand, although located in a prime position near the main entrance, seems smaller and less visible than it has been in the past. Canon has a massive stand at the opposite end of the hall, complete with cavernous presentation theatre. Olympus, Panasonic, Sony and Fujifilm occupy the centre of the hall with spaciously large stands. Pentax/Ricoh are off to one side with a rather more modest sized stand. Sigma again has a large and impressive stand to show off its wares. Tamron’s is more modest. A gallery of shots from the show aisles will follow later.

For more information about the exhibitors attending and the parallel events, including talks by great name photographers, check out The Photography Show official website.
